This position is under the direction of the Supervising/Attending Physician. This is an experienced athletic training position with responsibilities in the clinics. The incumbent will provide athletic training services under the direction of a designated physician. The incumbent has direct patient contact primarily for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology consistent with the scope and practice of athletic training clinical competencies as defined by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation. The incumbent must perform many of the outlined tasks with minimal or no supervision in the clinical setting and in the field. Patients include pediatric through geriatric populations in the clinical setting. Incumbent has access and knowledge of confidential medical information regarding patients' medical history. Access to this information is crucial in the evaluation and treatment of patients and athletes. Problems encountered are of a high level of complexity and a considerable amount of creativity, resourcefulness, and innovation are utilized in problem solving. Coordination of patient care services with other health care providers is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the use of relevant medical terminology, are essential. In addition to direct patient care, the incumbent would be responsible for one or all of the following: clinic pre-visit planning, coordination of care and new patient triage as assigned by the Supervising/Attending Physician. A wide variety of internal and external contact relationships are involved in performance of the duties of this position, and a high degree of independence in creating and enhancing these relationships is expected. Internal contact includes but are not limited to other members of the athletic training and physical therapy staff, physicians, medical residents and fellows, surgical schedulers, onsite and offsite scheduling staff, nursing personnel, fitness center staff, exercise physiology staff, preventive cardiology staff, radiology staff, public relations personnel, legal counsel, and a variety of clerical staff. External contacts include but are not limited to physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists from other institutions, academic athletic training programs, patient and/or athlete family members, coaches, athletic directors, equipment vendors, case managers and insurance representatives. The incumbent also plays a lead role in the development of clinical support staff, athletic training student interns and athletic training students. The incumbent is highly involved in the instruction and/or training activities of a variety of students, faculty, clients, patrons, and the general public. Student programming, staff development, and research facilitation are areas which involve a high degree of problem solving, interpretation and analysis. Therefore, a strong clinical, academic, and organizational background is necessary.

  • Perform an appropriate medical history on each patient seen that includes a thorough history of injury or condition, primary complaint, pain level assessment, past medical history, and quality of life assessment.
  • Conduct an appropriate physical examination on each patient seen, including range of motion testing, strength testing, sensation testing, palpation, functional testing, ligamentous testing, and special tests as needed.
  • Order diagnostic studies or other referrals under the direction of the attending physician, including radiographs, MRIs, EMG studies, CT scans, ultrasounds, rehabilitation referrals, and physician referrals.
  • Perform educational responsibilities specific to the needs of each individual patient, including exercise instruction and answering patient questions concerning treatment plans, surgery, rehabilitation, and future care.
  • Provide initial rehabilitation exercises and instruction, demonstration, and feedback on patient performance of exercises as directed by the attending physician.
  • Fit patients with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other durable medical equipment as directed by the attending physician and educate patients on appropriate use.
  • Remove sutures or staples and provide dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician.
  • Aid the physician in preparing patients for injections, including cleaning and disinfecting the area to be injected and preparing materials.
  • Complete all required documentation for each patient encounter accurately following UW Health guidelines.
  • Schedule patient follow-up clinic appointments.
  • Undergraduate Degree in Athletic Training.
  • Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide on all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret insurance co-pays and deductibles.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to type 45 WPM, basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook/Office, and experience using or ability to learn and comprehend computer programs.
  • Two (2) years' experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in an Outreach, Rehab, or Physician Practice setting.
