The Athletic Trainer is the primary responder responsible for providing care for routine and emergent injuries sustained during Club Sports events. Playing a vital role in the department's emergency action plan, AT's work with the Competitive Sports Staff to ensure club participants, spectators and visitors are afforded a reasonably safe participation environment. AT's report directly to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and may receive additional direction from all members of the Competitive Sports Leadership Team (Competitive Sports Coordinator and Graduate Assistant/Intern) and the supervising physician. These staff members respond to emergencies providing efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured abiding by the department's emergency action plan. In addition, AT's are responsible for treating minor injuries. In addition to providing immediate care, AT's are responsible for determining a participant's fitness for returning to play including evaluating the potential for sustained concussions. AT's should monitor environmental factors that may impact participant and spectator safety. In the event of the need to deny participation or modify a play schedule, these staff must exhibit strong leadership and communication to ensure potential risks are mitigated.
