About The Position

MUSC Health - Orangeburg is seeking a passionate Certified Athletic Trainer to play a meaningful role at the heart of community sports and health. In this dynamic position, you'll support the Rehab Services and Sports Medicine Departments while serving Orangeburg County School District student-athletes directly at a high school site. You'll be a trusted point-of-care professional, delivering prevention, injury management, on-field coverage, rehabilitation, referral guidance, and community outreach for athletes across multiple age groups. Under the collaboration of a skilled healthcare team including physicians, physical therapists, and advanced practice providers, you'll help keep athletes safe, strong, and ready for the next play.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (BOC) examination
  • Current active certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association
  • Current active licensure by the Department of Health and Environmental Control to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of South Carolina or gain SC licensure within 6 months upon selection for position
  • Participation in continuing education (75 CEU's every 3 years).
  • Ability to maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
  • Graduate of an accredited college with a BS/BA. (Master's degree in athletic training preferred).
  • Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC).
  • Certified as an Athletic Trainer in South Carolina by DHEC.
  • Must be able to adjust communication both verbal and non-verbal to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide variety of age groups including school age adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
  • Weekend and evening hours to cover practices, games, tournaments, and special events.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Athletic Training or other appropriate field
  • Possess previous Orthopaedic experience
  • Have experience with clinical Orthopaedic operations.

Responsibilities

  • Attends assigned athletic events
  • Is punctual and professional in attire and behavior 100% of the time.
  • Provides acute evaluation of sports related injuries.
  • Monitors exacerbation of chronic conditions requiring medical attention.
  • Utilizes professional judgment to triage patients to appropriate level of care.
  • Actively refers potential patients to MUSC services.
  • Works collaboratively with the team's coaches and athletes.
  • Acts as liaison between physician/physical therapist and team coach.
  • Communicates playing status of the athlete to MD, PT, and coach on a regular basis.
  • Responds to electronic communication and meeting requests in a timely manner
  • For referred athletes - sends information including patient history and MOI to the appropriate healthcare provider
  • Regularly updates success factors throughout the year
  • Consistently manages schedule and ATC Calendar
  • Selects and performs appropriate assessment procedures based on accepted practice standards.
  • Assessment of general medical sports related conditions, injuries and fitness to play.
  • Refers to appropriate professionals to include; orthopedic surgeon, primary care physician, physical therapist, and psychologist.
  • Documentation for referred athletes is completed on day of injury/referral in the ATC referral database/documentation system
  • Documentation for non-referred athletes is completed on day of injury and updated regularly in ATC referral database/documentation system
  • Accurately documents results such as range of motion, strength, reflexes, palpation, visual appearance, diagnosis, treatment plan and playing status
  • Is proficient with taping, bracing, padding, for treatment of acute injuries and injury prevention.
  • Proficient with wound care on the field for acute sports injuries.
  • Safely and appropriately administers modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, heat, ice, etc…
  • Is knowledgeable about prophylactic bracing and sports related Durable medical equipment.
  • Develops a patient specific rehabilitation program designed to restore function after injury, aid in injury prevention and enhance athletic performance.
  • Appropriately refers patients to MUSC Sports Medicine services
  • Coordinates return to play care and maintenance program with treating physician and PT
  • Organizes and pre-participation physical screening/assessments.
  • Maintains documentation for PPEs
  • Identifies concerns and refers to the appropriate health care provider.
  • Establishes a program to monitor athletes' health status throughout the year.
  • Develops and Implements Sports Performance and Conditioning Program
  • Successfully implements Injury Prevention program for multiple sports.
  • Monitors outcomes of the program.
