About The Position

The University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) announces a search for an Assistant Dean of Small Animal Hospitals (ADSAH). The Assistant Dean position will be a 1.0 FTE with 75-80% administrative duties and 20-25% academic assignments (teaching, research, service). The ADSAH provides leadership, administers oversight of the medical care of patients, and guides the Small Animal Hospitals (SAH) in the strategic and operational aspects of clinical services. The ADSAH oversees the functions performed by clinicians (faculty and house officers) in the provision of veterinary care in the UFVH (Small Animal Hospital – Gainesville, and UF Pet Emergency and Treatment Services (UFPETS) – Ocala), consistent with the mission of the college and university. Essential Functions Responsible for the Patient Quality and Safety (PSQ) Program In coordination with the Risk Manager and Safety Officer, evaluation of all levels of safety concerns within the SAH and UFPETS, and development of initiatives and policies to mitigate patient risk Active promotion of Just Culture Provision of PQS quarterly reports to the Hospital Board. Including supervision of the Patient Quality & Safety Officer and Risk Manager Provision of assistance to service chiefs when addressing patient quality and safety issues and resolution of conflicts related to patient care In coordination with the Client Service Manager, assist with resolving client concerns related to patient/medical care Chairs and is responsible for oversight of the SAH Infection Control program of the relevant area in conjunction with the respective Infection Control Committee and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee In consultation with the Associate Dean of Clinical Services – SA (ADCS – SA), reviews the performance of small animal clinical faculty to ensure efficient operational management of the UFVH Oversight and management of Pet Samaritan Funds Ensure compliance with medical record documentation in the UF SAH, as detailed in the Clinician Handbook Works with the Medical Director (House Officers) to address issues that arise with medical care of patients managed by interns, residents, and fellows. Works with ADCS – SA, medical directors, and Service Chiefs to optimize: Clinic schedules and throughput On-call schedules Develop clinical policies and protocols and ensure compliance Address concerns regarding faculty or house officer welfare in the clinic Address concerns regarding faculty or house officer behavior Fills in for ADCS – SA when needed Attends Service Chiefs’ meetings regularly Aids the ADCS – SA with faculty wellness initiatives Assist in developing and implementing strategic initiatives/projects for the UFVH Assures compliance with federal/state veterinary practice regulations and college and University of Florida policies Serves on the Hospital Board and Hospital Management Council Additional Responsibilities Takes responsibility for and follows through on other projects as assigned Promotes a high-quality standard of veterinary care to patients Promotes excellent customer service to both clients and referring veterinarians Promote the philosophy, values, and mission of the university and the college Upholds the mission and values of the UFVH Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Selection Criteria Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer satisfaction with all stakeholders, including administration, employees, clients, communities, regulatory agencies, and referring veterinarians Demonstrates oral and written communication skills that are clear, constructive, and timely Can participate as a team member fostering collaborative decision-making among committees, teams, or work groups of diverse composition Ability to develop and encourage effective working relationships between clinicians and staff Knowledge and understanding of the integrated professional, technical and administrative principles and procedures of clinical practice Ability to foster a cooperative work environment Ability to provide clinical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in their area of expertise Ability to provide faculty/house officers with meaningful and accurate feedback on their performance Ability to develop, plan and implement short-and long-range goals The successful candidate will have an academic appointment as an Assistant, Associate Professor or Professor (Clinical or Tenure Track as appropriate). The incumbent in this position will report to the department chair for their faculty assignment and the Associate Dean for Clinical Services – Small Animal (ADCS-SA) for the Assistant Dean assignment. The ADCS-SA will complete the annual evaluation on the performance of the administrative duties with input from the department chair on their faculty assignment.

Requirements

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign veterinary degree plus at least six years of clinical experience and three years of leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer satisfaction with all stakeholders, including administration, employees, clients, communities, regulatory agencies, and referring veterinarians
  • Demonstrates oral and written communication skills that are clear, constructive, and timely
