About the position

The Assistant Manager for Lowell Winthrop at Harvard University plays a crucial role in overseeing the dining services operations, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations, and delivering exceptional customer service. This position involves managing a team of service staff, executing catered events, and maintaining high standards of food quality and sanitation. The Assistant Manager will also be responsible for inventory management and fostering positive relationships with both staff and university stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in leading a team of non-exempt service staff in managing a retail unit in compliance with food safety rules and customer service expectations.
  • Implement and monitor the FoodPro menu and inventory management system, ensuring cost control and inventory audits.
  • Solicit, sell, plan, and execute catered events, including conferences and campus-wide events.
  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring customer service excellence and dietary needs are met.
  • Ensure kitchen equipment is operational and alert the Unit Manager of needed repairs.
  • Maintain the physical plant of the unit, ensuring it is organized and in good repair.
  • Ensure compliance with unit-specific sustainability goals and programs.
  • Learn all aspects of the retail unit, including cash handling and micros.

Requirements

  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management or related field, or 2-3 years of related foodservice management experience.
  • Previous financial and human resource management experience in a food industry environment.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new systems and applications as needed.
  • Experience with the sale and execution of catered events.
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of Kronos timekeeping software or similar system.
  • Knowledge of FoodPro Menu Management system.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse constituency.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Good professional judgment and ability to independently make sound business decisions.
  • Ability to become ServSafe Certified within six months of employment.
