About the position

The Assistant Grocery Manager exemplifies and ensures strong customer service in all areas of the job. This role provides a superior quality product that exceeds customers' expectations. The Assistant Grocery Manager has a working knowledge of the department functions and maintains an adequate amount of fresh inventory. They are primarily responsible for assisting with keeping and maintaining a fresh inventory, processing administrative paperwork, and maintaining accurate department records.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on providing fast and friendly Customer Service.
  • Assists customers by making product suggestions.
  • Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques via telephone, in-store intercom announcements, and one-on-one customer interaction.
  • Answers and responds to incoming calls appropriately. Receives and appropriately resolves customer complaints and reports to Store Director as needed.
  • Responsible for total store operations in the absence of the Store Director.
  • Assists with planning daily operations, monitoring production process following company procedures and profitability.
  • Builds Grocery displays, rotates and discards outdated or spoiled product. Ensures cleanliness of work area and department.
  • Implements effective promotional and seasonal displays. Assists with coordinating grocery sales promotions.
  • Ensures that merchandise is correctly priced and displayed and that shelves are clean and properly maintained.
  • Ability to follow and maintain department standards and requirements.
  • Monitors employee productivity.
  • May schedule employees to ensure adequate coverage and service levels.
  • Specific knowledge of duties performed by all department employees.
  • Schedule, supervise, train and assign duties to department employees.
  • Train employees in store policies, sales and record keeping procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper code dating for all products within the department are being enforced.
  • Prepare sales and inventory reports. Physical inventory taken every 6 months.
  • Controls inventory to ensure adequate product quantity, quality and freshness and maintains inventory levels according to division directives.
  • Assists with ordering Grocery products and maintaining inventory levels according to Division directives.
  • Controls shrink and cost.
  • Implements correct product preparation techniques.
  • Performs receiving duties including breaking down loads, verifying orders using invoices, inspecting quality, reporting shortage, stocking and rotating product.
  • Ensures that proper temperature levels for product are maintained.
  • Complies with all workplace safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness and sanitation of work area, cooler, equipment and display area.
  • Implements emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.
  • Operates computer software and electronic ordering devices to order product.
  • May attend and participate in sales meetings.
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with company grooming standards and dress code.
  • Responsible for performing all job duties and responsibilities safely, accurately and with honesty and integrity.

Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to frequently reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Bends, stoops and reaches frequently.
  • Pushes and pulls fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks.
  • Performs repetitious arm movement to prepare, package and display products.
  • Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Mental alertness to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and weights and measures.
  • Knowledge of product variety, standards, perishability, product handling, sanitation, labeling and department policies and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in grocery or retail management.
  • Familiarity with inventory management systems.
  • Previous experience in customer service roles.
