The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the interdisciplinary theme of energy. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of academic and research programs in architectural engineering and to the research community. This search is focused on those candidates exploring cutting edge efforts under the interdisciplinary theme of energy, including the following: integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities, grid reliability and energy infrastructure as well as net-zero-energy buildings and net metering. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a closely-related discipline at the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate potential to develop a collaborative and externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses. The starting date is August 18, 2026. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural engineering.
  • Develop courses and participate in curriculum development.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students throughout the course of their studies.
  • Perform and conduct research related to energy, including integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities.
  • Establish a strong research agenda leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals.
  • Participate in local, national and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline.
  • Perform service activities normally expected of university faculty commensurate with rank, including committee service to Department, School, and University.
  • Engage in national and international service to the profession.
  • Earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a closely-related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrable expertise in the field of integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively and work well with others as demonstrated through application materials and interview.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Sustained record of scholarship and research (for Associate Professor and Professor levels).
  • Evidence of national recognition in the field (for Associate Professor level).
  • Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams (for Associate Professor and Professor levels).
  • A minimum of five years of post-Ph.D. professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience (for Associate Professor level).
  • A minimum of ten years of post-Ph.D. professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience, with a sustained record of leadership (for Professor level).
