Hughes & Company is actively hiring for an Associate to join the investment team. This individual will play a central role in identifying, evaluating, and supporting investments in innovative healthcare software and technology-enabled services companies, and gain unique exposure into portfolio operations and value creation initiatives. The Investment Associate role offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about driving innovation and improving outcomes across the U.S. healthcare system. As part of our team, you will play a hands-on role in identifying, evaluating, and supporting investments in healthcare technology companies that are shaping the future of care delivery. We are looking for candidates who combine analytical rigor with genuine curiosity about the healthcare landscape. You should be comfortable working in fast-paced, dynamic environments and capable of building trusted relationships with internal teams, portfolio company executives, and external partners. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is essential, along with strong communication and presentation skills. The ideal candidate has 2+ years of experience in investment banking, private equity, consulting, corporate development, or strategy, with a demonstrated understanding of growth-stage businesses—particularly in healthcare and technology. Successful candidates are motivated self-starters who thrive on solving complex problems, taking initiative, and contributing to long-term value creation. This position is based in our Chicago office and requires in-person collaboration with our investment team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a top-tier university in the U.S
  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, consulting, corporate development, strategy, or other related roles
  • Strong understanding of growth-stage businesses with recurring revenues, particularly within the healthcare and technology sectors
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including knowledge of valuation techniques and financial modeling
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team
  • Familiarity with financial statements, market analysis, customer evaluation, and structuring private equity deals
  • Ability to simplify complex ideas and present them clearly in both written and oral forms
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills
  • Professional demeanor with excellent relationship-building and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough analyses of potential investments, including financial modeling and preparation of deal memoranda
  • Actively participate in the entire due diligence process including business, financial, technology, market and customer diligence; help direct and manage third-party advisors including accounting, tax, technology, market and legal
  • Analyze and present findings on company information, collaborating on all aspects of due diligence, legal, and financial reviews, as well as the closing process
  • Assist in preparing materials and negotiations with financing sources and lenders
  • Cultivate relationships with management teams, external advisors, and industry experts to develop a robust network
  • Collaborate on market research, identifying emerging trends and refining firm investment thesis
  • Attend industry conferences and networking events to build relationships and identify potential investment opportunities
  • Maintain and organize a transaction database to ensure accuracy and relevancy
  • Work with internal teams and executive leadership on value creation initiatives
  • Support the monitoring of operational initiatives within portfolio companies
  • Assist in developing dashboards and reporting key performance indicators for portfolio companies
  • Aid in meeting internal and external reporting requirements related to the portfolio
  • Assist in preparing presentations and materials for investor reporting and meetings
