About The Position

Messer operates a World Class fleet repair and refurbishment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, focusing on maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of transport equipment to ensure safe and reliable assets. The primary work involves restoring fleet trailers to "Like New" condition, including welding, fabrication, assembly, wiring, hydraulics, pneumatics, component rebuilding, testing, and certification. This is an entry-level position supporting welding and fabrication in the subframe fabrication shop. Compensation is progressive, with annual adjustments over a 3-year period as skills develop, leading to a promotion to a full Welder-Fabricator upon successful completion of training and qualification.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic mechanics tool set, or the willingness and ability to procure one within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Ability to do basic math
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop personal skills and abilities
  • Strong ability to take direction and input from more experienced co-workers
  • Strong desire to progress through the qualification process to full Welder-Fabricator status
  • High School Diploma or GED

Nice To Haves

  • Limited or entry level experience with welding and fabricating, ideally from a vocational school, tech school, shop class, or other instructional program
  • Ability to read work instructions, blueprints, and/or flow charts
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Creative thinking mindset to suggest improvements and changes

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Perform individual welding and fabrication tasks on trailers under the supervision of more experienced welder-fabricators
  • Assist more experienced welder-fabricators with fabricating subframes and weldments
  • Assist the Site Support Technician with breaking down and disassembly of incoming trailers for rebuilding
  • Other miscellaneous site tasks and responsibilities as dictated by the site leadership team
