About The Position

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Institutional Advancement will serve as a senior advisor in the Division of Institutional Advancement, providing high-level strategic guidance and direction for advancing the university’s mission. The AVP is responsible for driving long-term strategic initiatives and partnerships, aligning the division's goals with the university's broader vision, and advancing fundraising, alumni relations, and community engagement efforts. This role will involve advising executive leadership on best practices, setting division-wide priorities, and managing critical development and engagement functions. The AVP will work closely with the Vice President (VP) to lead the strategic planning process, ensuring that all development efforts are aligned with the institution's goals and priorities. Additionally, the AVP will collaborate with university leadership to integrate advancement efforts into the broader institutional strategy, ensuring that fundraising efforts enhance academic excellence and student success.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years progressively responsible fundraising, preferably in major gift fundraising, and high-level donor engagement in a development office.
  • Applicants may be required to complete the institution’s required skills assessment to beconsidered. Some positions require specific skills such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, email or calendaring software, and Internet proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership Provide high-level strategic advisement to the Vice President and university leadership regarding institutional priorities, resource development, and community engagement.
  • Support the strategic planning process for the Division of Institutional Advancement, ensuring alignment with the university’s long-term objectives.
  • Analyze trends in philanthropy, higher education, and community engagement to 2 inform strategic direction and maximize opportunities for growth and innovation.
  • Maintain a fundraising portfolio of $500,000 - 1 million.
  • Fundraising and Development Strategy Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive fundraising strategies for major gift prospects, ensuring a high level of donor engagement.
  • Advise on the creation and execution of fundraising campaigns, including capital campaigns, annual giving, and planned giving, to achieve ambitious philanthropic goals.
  • Collaborate with deans, faculty, and staff to identify strategic fundraising opportunities that support academic priorities and enhance student success.
  • Board and Stakeholder Engagement Serve as a liaison between the Division of Institutional Advancement and the CSU Development Foundation Board of Directors, ensuring the board is actively engaged in fundraising and philanthropic activities.
  • Advise the VP and university leadership on best practices for board governance, recruitment, and strategic involvement in fundraising efforts.
  • Develop strategies to expand stakeholder engagement, including alumni, corporate partners, and philanthropic organizations, to enhance the university’s visibility and impact.
  • Operational Oversight and Team Leadership Provide strategic oversight for the operational and administrative functions of the division, including budget management, gift processing, donor stewardship, and compliance with institutional policies.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of advancement professionals, setting clear goals and ensuring accountability for results.
  • Ensure the implementation of best practices across all areas of advancement, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Institutional Alignment and Collaboration Partner with university leaders to ensure alignment between fundraising initiatives and academic, research, and student success priorities.
