The Associate Underwriter analyzes, selects and prices risks that are acceptable to assigned insurance programs and underwrites policies for an assigned area of coverage.

  • Achieve profit and production targets among assigned agents.
  • Assess risks as delegated, ensuring thorough review and approval within designated authority.
  • Identify and meticulously analyze loss trends and historical data to determine risk-based profitability. Adhere to National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) and Insurance Services Office (ISO) regulations when assessing and binding each risk.
  • Review and address daily reports within authorized limits; adhere to departmental protocols when requesting Loss Control Reports.
  • Generate quotations for agents and accurately input revised quotes into the computer system.
  • Respond to inbound calls from agents, members, and prospects, offering insightful answers and resolving issues within the scope of technical expertise.
  • Review monthly renewals for pricing adjustments or non-renewal based on historical data. Utilize technical expertise to recommend changes to accounts that have undergone Audit Specialists' review and are under evaluation by the underwriting team.
  • Manage daily correspondence requiring technical evaluation with precision and attention to detail.
  • Provide comprehensive training and coaching to underwriting assistants, taking the lead on assigned projects.
  • Execute all tasks with accuracy and adherence to departmental guidelines.
  • Contribute to and engage in initiatives aimed at process enhancement and cost efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Three or more years of property and casualty experience in Worker’s Compensation or General Liability product lines
  • Insurance and/or Pictorial course work completion
  • Knowledge of insurance concepts, standard practices and procedures in the underwriting discipline
  • Skill in interpersonal interactions, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external contacts; skill in customer service and problem-solving
  • Capacity to work autonomously while ensuring transparent communication with internal leadership
  • Skill in analysis, time management, prioritization, negotiation and project management; ability to multi-task effectively while paying attention to detail
  • Proficient in both verbal and written communication with the ability to compose memos, correspondence, agreements, and other professional documents for all levels of recipients; ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality
