About The Position

James River Insurance is seeking to hire an Associate Underwriter, with opportunities for growth to Senior and Executive Underwriter levels. The Associate Underwriter will work under the direction of the Underwriting Manager or Division Manager to learn how to review and analyze underwriting data, determine if risks meet corporate underwriting standards, calculate appropriate premiums, and respond to brokers regarding risks that do not meet underwriting guidelines. The role involves developing and maintaining profitable business relationships with brokers and requires a commitment to the company's core values of Integrity, Accountability, Innovation, Customer Service, Communication, and Teamwork.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Aptitude for learning how to effectively assess risk
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • High level of initiative and motivation
  • Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed
  • Solid customer service and relationship building skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Internet researching

  • Professional designation preferred for Senior and Executive Underwriter levels

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication, Teamwork, Innovation, and Customer Service
  • Increase knowledge of key insurance concepts through on-the-job training, assigned manuals, and self-study
  • Review submissions, analyze and document key exposures, price accounts, and complete worksheets
  • Accept, modify, or reject risks
  • Attain premium, loss ratio, and service goals as assigned
  • Complete policy maintenance requirements
  • Check issued policies for accuracy
  • Review upcoming renewal applications and prior year renewal files to ensure risks still meet underwriting requirements
  • Prepare renewal files for quoting
  • Build and develop relationships with key wholesale broker clients
  • Travel at least 3 times per year with an experienced Underwriter to meet with brokers
  • Perform other duties as required
