JOB SUMMARY ICW Specialty’s Associate Underwriter role will supports the launch and growth of our new Excess Casualty underwriting business by providing advanced operational, administrative, and execution support in a highly dynamic environment. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and judgment, supporting complex underwriting activity where formal processes, workflows, and documentation are still being established. The role combines traditional underwriting support responsibilities with process development, problem-solving, and close partnership with underwriters, operations, and systems teams. This role is critical to enabling the successful launch and scale of ICW’s new Excess Casualty business. The Associate Underwriter ensures underwriting execution remains accurate, compliant, and efficient while helping establish the operational foundation that will support future growth.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of underwriting support, underwriting operations, or underwriting associate experience.
  • Experience supporting Excess Casualty or complex commercial casualty lines.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in new, evolving, or ambiguous environments.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting documentation, policy issuance, and insurance terminology.
  • Proficiency with underwriting and policy administration systems.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting a start-up, new product, or greenfield underwriting operation.
  • Exposure to layered, large-limit, or bespoke casualty programs.
  • Experience helping define or improve underwriting operational processes.
  • Insurance designations (AINS, CPCU coursework, or similar) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Advanced Underwriting Operations Support Provide underwriting support for Excess Casualty new business and renewals.
  • Manage underwriting workflow end to end in an environment with evolving processes and limited standardization.
  • Prepare and process binders, endorsements, and policy documentation in coordination with underwriting direction.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of underwriting files in a fast-paced growth environment.
  • New Business & Process Development Support Support the build-out of underwriting operational processes for a new Excess Casualty business.
  • Help define and document workflows, procedures, and best practices as business volumes grow.
  • Identify operational gaps, inefficiencies, or risks and escalate issues with proposed solutions.
  • Adapt quickly to changing underwriting approaches, systems, and requirements.
  • Data, Systems & Quality Oversight Perform detailed data entry and validation for risk, premium, limit, and exposure data.
  • Analyze submission data, including loss runs, and exposure information and organize for input into rating system.
  • Partner with underwriters and operations leaders to ensure data accuracy and consistency across systems.
  • Support system configuration, testing, and enhancements related to Excess Casualty underwriting.
  • Troubleshoot data and system issues and coordinate resolution with internal teams.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination Act as a primary operational point of contact for underwriters, brokers, and internal partners.
  • Coordinate with Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Compliance, and Operations to support underwriting execution.
  • Track open items and dependencies across functions to ensure timely policy issuance and renewal.
  • Controls, Documentation & Compliance Support establishment of underwriting controls, documentation standards, and file organization.
  • Ensure transactions align with internal guidelines as they are developed.
  • Maintain audit-ready files in a developing operational environment.
  • Assist with regulatory or internal reviews as needed.
  • Knowledge Leadership (IC) Apply strong knowledge of Excess Casualty products, terminology, and underwriting workflows.
  • Serve as an experienced resource for less experienced underwriting support staff as the team grows.
  • Share best practices and lessons learned to support operational maturity.
