About The Position

Selective Insurance is seeking an Associate Trial Attorney for our Latham/Albany, NY Staff Counsel operation. This is a hybrid position with mandatory two days per week in the office, although we will consider a remote option for the right candidate. The attorney, with the assistance of a talented support staff, will be responsible for the defense of the case from start to resolution. The position requires exceptional client communication skills, courtroom experience (civil or criminal) and the ability to timely report and respond to the carrier with insight and value added analysis. Requirements

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Edge or Chrome.
  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
  • At least 3-5 years experience in New York.
  • Juris Doctor degree from ABA accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing of the New York Bar.
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with New York laws, local court policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Defend personal injury, property damage and other matters in and around Albany and Central New York.
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, letters, memoranda, reports and on occasion appeals.
  • Direct and undertake discovery practice including depositions, expert selection and all other pre-trial preparations.
  • Communicate with, meet and regularly update the client and claims personnel regarding the status of pending matters.
  • Communicate with opposing counsel, the courts and others as needed.
  • Research and brief issues using Lexis and other computer/web based data sources, law reporters and other law library materials.
  • Develop litigation strategy for all assigned cases.
  • Provide analysis to claims in the form of legal opinions, recommendations and digests of recent developments in decisional and statutory law.
  • Report to managing attorney concerning status of matters and provide other information as requested.
  • Try cases to conclusion before judges, juries and other triers of fact including ADR.
