About The Position

Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment. Purpose of Position: This class of position encompasses the provision of respiratory care requiring a high degree of knowledge, skill and responsibility in accordance with established protocols. May supervise technical and ancillary personnel. All personnel perform related work. Under medical and technical supervision of a duly licensed Physician, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, performs the following functions and activities:

Requirements

Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,
Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,
Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
At the time of appointment, and to maintain the position of Associate Respiratory Therapist, individuals must meet and maintain the licensure requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department covering the practice of respiratory therapy.

Responsibilities

Responds to all cardiorespiratory emergency requests and provides respiratory care, as needed.
Maintains inventory of respiratory care equipment and supplies required to provide respiratory care.
Administers and monitors medical gases and humidifier systems.
Administers and evaluates aerosolized medications to the respiratory tract.
Initiates, monitors and adjusts parameters on continuous mechanical ventilators.
May perform various procedures to obtain blood samples for pH blood gas analysis.
May perform blood gas analysis and related quality control functions.
May perform routine maintenance of department blood gas analyzers in accordance with Department of Health regulations.
May perform pulmonary function studies.
Completes Initiates, maintains and monitors various cardio-respiratory non-invasive equipment.
May perform chest physiotherapy.
Manages the cardio-respiratory status of patients requiring continuous mechanical ventilation during transport.
Establishes and maintains artificial airways and performs special procedures.
Performs cardio-respiratory invasive procedures in accordance with established protocols.
Plans and coordinates day-to-day patient care activities as it relates to the practice of respiratory therapy.
Completes required documentation.
Coordinates and/or supervises activities of assigned technical and ancillary personnel.
