About The Position

We are seeking an Associate Research Scientist to join our Advanced Computing Enablement group at Texas A&M’s High Performance Research Computing (HPRC). This role is crucial for addressing the specialized research needs of our expanding HPRC community. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership and expertise in computational research, support extramural funding pursuits, and respond to user queries regarding research computing resources.

Requirements

  • PhD in computer science, or related physical science or engineering field that uses research computing approaches.
  • Three years of professional experience (post PhD) with research computing frameworks and their applications to solve problems in one or more scientific domains.
  • Excellent oral, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of programming, software development.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Fortran, C++, or CUDA, with the ability to learn others as needed.
  • Familiarity with tools, applications, and techniques used in scientific computing.
  • Proficient in using the LINUX/UNIX operating systems.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple task loads.
  • Ability to work on team projects and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to collaborate, learn continuously and be adaptable.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with scientific applications common to research computing environments.
  • Familiarity with popular analysis toolkits such as R, Python frameworks, and Matlab.
  • Familiarity with software management suites such as Anaconda.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks such as, Pytorch.
  • Familiarity with organizing information and data management services.
  • Familiarity with composable environments, cloud platforms, containers, kubernetes, and other forward facing HPC technologies.
  • Experience in developing partnerships and collaborations.
  • Demonstrate project management and coordination capabilities.
  • Demonstrate an ability to write scientific, general purpose, and technical documents.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical leadership and expertise to the facility’s user community in the computational aspects of their research through intensive consulting, training and general support activities, all aiming at integrating current and emerging HPC technologies into research.
  • Leads and supports activities aimed toward the pursuit of extramural funding.
  • Responds to user queries regarding research computing resources.
  • Supports funded efforts at HPRC.
  • Works with HPRC staff to provide technical and strategic guidance to the user-community via a well-maintained campus and ACCESS user-knowledge base.
  • Collects, and updates application benchmark data on HPRC supported technologies.
  • Offers guidance to help researchers integrate research computing technologies into their science and engineering workflows.
  • Evaluates knowledge-base and training platforms to offer a continuum of user-support.
  • Provides technical and strategic guidance to users on new research computing technologies via year-long training opportunities.
  • Establishes standards and practices for teaching HPRC courses.
  • Offers training sessions to HPRC users in remote, hybrid, live in-person, and asynchronous formats.
  • Supports formal curricular efforts that use HPRC resources.
  • Participates in HPRC’s outreach efforts geared to the larger community.
  • Supports funded efforts and assists in the preparation for external funding.
  • Conducts self-guided research in topics relevant to research computing.
  • Presents findings at conferences and through publications in proceedings and professional journals.
  • Pursues external funding opportunities.
