We have an opening for an Associate Program Director (APD) for Livermore Computing System and Environments in the Weapon Simulation and Computing (WSC) program within the Strategic Deterrence (SD) directorate. The chosen candidate will also have a complementary role as the Deputy Principal Associate Director for High Performance Computing in the Computing directorate. You will lead and manage all aspects of Livermore Computing's (LC) mission to support High Performance Computing (HPC) environments for the LLNL and NNSA mission, including classified and unclassified operations, services, procurements, and long-term strategy. This includes planning and managing the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Facilities, Operations and User Support, ASC Computational Systems and Software Environment, and the Multiprogrammatic and Institutional Computing (M&IC) budgets to ensure leverage of ASC and M&IC procurements and common operations and services across all environments. You will be responsible for representing LC in multi-laboratory interactions sponsored by DOE, including long range planning of R&D investments and contracts related to HPC, AI, and other emerging advanced computing technologies. You will be expected to work closely and regularly with principal customers in the Weapons Program, including the Associate Directors for Weapons Physics and Design (WPD), Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) and their respective leadership teams to ensure that programmatic objectives are met and that LC is meeting expectations. You will ensure that M&IC executes appropriately for the institution, strategizes with the Institutional Computing Executive Group, and consults on approaches & budgets with the LLNL Senior Management Team on at least an annual basis. You will have a responsibility to look across the laboratory to assure that LC supports the vitality of HPC across LLNL. You will also be expected to interact routinely with DOE program managers in the (Advanced Simulation and Computing) ASC program on relevant issues. In addition, you will routinely interact with professional colleagues, internal management, and sponsor organizations internal and external to LLNL.

  • Establish and manage a clear framework for accomplishing WSC goals in providing efficient and sufficient access to HPC resources in classified and unclassified environments.
  • Provide strategic vision and leadership that assures LC continues to meet programmatic objectives now and into the future.
  • Work closely with senior HPC stakeholders across SD.
  • Develop and manage an annual budget of $80M-$120M ASC and $12-15M M&IC.
  • In consultation with the WSC AD and any designated M&IC leader, take responsibility for M&IC and ensure investments are consistent with LC directions and that LC delivers to the institution the services it requires.
  • Oversee a multidisciplinary staff of computer scientists, engineers, and technicians through technical area leads and technical managers covering all platform and simulation environment needs of SD and M&IC.
  • Stay engaged with the institution: LC is a critical resource for all LLNL S&T and the APD must think broadly and with intellectual flexibility.
  • Engage with NNSA, DOE and other agency program sponsors.
  • Engage with the Computing Directorate leadership team in strategic planning, ISCP portfolio management, and providing advisement to the Principal Associate Director and other senior leaders.
  • Be responsible for the general oversight of and demonstrate personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H regulations, and good business practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • An active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Highly advanced leadership skills, experience in strategic planning, fiscal management, and project/program management. Experience negotiating effectively with high-level management and executives.
  • Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge of High Performance Computing, including computational science, computer science, and simulation technologies.
  • Advanced organizational problem-solving, and decision-making; necessary to independently advise, counsel, recommend, and develop solutions on a wide variety of complex technical and programmatic issues.
  • Extensive experience leading HPC projects or programs with high impact to the organization and high consequence of error.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and accurately convey technical content and value propositions to both expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Ability to define and set clear goals and expectations with the ability to work with conflicting priorities and multiple deadlines.
