We welcome applicants who can bridge American literary studies with one or more of the following areas of study: African American Literature, Indigenous Literature, African Diaspora Literatures of the Americas, Afro-futurism and science/speculative fiction, environmental literature, Black theatre and popular cultures. We seek outstanding applicants with a demonstrated track record of excellence in research, teaching and service. Successful candidates are expected to develop extramurally funded research programs in their areas of expertise, actively participate in the Department's teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Evidence of interest and success in mentoring underrepresented students is highly desired. Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Howard University was currently classified as an R1 research university. It is a residential campus of approximately 14,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC. The Department of English currently consists of 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, conducting research with specializations in African, African American, American, British and Caribbean and comparative literatures and critical theory. It offers BA and PhD degrees in these areas and is developing an M.F.A. in Creative Writing

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in English or Literatures in English (or a related field such as Afro-American/Africana Studies or Cultural Studies) from an accredited institution
  • Record of scholarship commensurate with the rank of assistant professor
  • Record of teaching excellence at the graduate and undergraduate level
  • Evidence of effective communication, organizational skills and professional service
