About The Position

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine invites applications for the inaugural Spofford Harris Kimball endowed chair in Mathematics. The successful candidate will be appointed to a regular tenured faculty position and will hold the Spofford Harris Kimball Chair for an initial period of five years, with renewal contingent on satisfactory performance through the standard institutional evaluation process. This is an academic year position, most likely at the rank of Professor, although an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor is also possible depending on the candidate’s experience. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be a pure or applied mathematician with an outstanding record of scholarly activity, teaching, and advising. Proven experience in attracting external funding is strongly preferred, commensurate with rank. The department is especially interested in candidates who can both enhance our present activities and bring additional stimulus to our programs; please address this in your cover letter. Some preference may also be given to applicants working in probability or mathematical statistics, but all areas of pure or applied mathematics in which the department is active will be considered. We welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to an inclusive experience for a student body that reflects the university’s commitment to non-discrimination.
