About The Position

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) at Boston University (BU) College of Fine Arts is seeking applications for the position of Associate Professor of Visual Art, a non-tenure track role. The ideal candidate will be a well-established artist with a national reputation, specializing in painting and adjacent areas. This position requires a strong commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate (BFA, BA) and graduate (MFA) levels, as well as advising graduate students. The successful candidate will demonstrate a versatile skill set and proficiency in contemporary, historical, conceptual, and material approaches to visual art, particularly in painting. Boston University’s School of Visual Arts is recognized nationally and aims to be a leading institution in the field of visual arts. The graduate painting program (MFA) is currently ranked #6 by US News & World Report. The school has a rich history in sculpture and graphic design and has recently expanded its offerings to include Visual Narrative, printmaking, and photography through a newly established Print Media & Photography graduate program. The faculty seeks an artist and educator who can complement and enhance the existing team, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to create work that is both rigorous and exploratory in form and content. Candidates must possess a deep understanding of the materials, techniques, intellectual discourse, and history of visual art, informed by recent work and scholarship. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach advanced students in both studio and seminar courses, demonstrating a proven ability to convey the critical and conceptual frameworks of visual art. An MFA in a related area is required, along with a strong exhibition record and evidence of impact in the field at the national level. Additionally, candidates should have a solid record of college-level teaching experience that showcases excellent mentorship and innovative pedagogical approaches.
