About The Position

The Crown Publishing Group, a dynamic and multifaceted division of Penguin Random House, is seeking an Associate Production Editor who will be responsible for working on a variety of trade and literary fiction, memoir, and narrative nonfiction, with the opportunity to production edit illustrated titles, including cookbooks, children’s books, and gift products, from manuscript to bound book. Must love books; be proactive; have excellent grammar, copyediting, and proofreading skills; and be able to produce high-quality books while adhering to tight deadlines. Prior experience with one-color nonfiction and fiction preferred.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ prior experience as an assistant production editor at a trade publishing house highly desired; or 4 to 5 years’ similar or equivalent experience in managing editorial or editorial departments
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills; completion of a copyediting and/or proofreading course a plus
  • Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th and 18th editions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Detail- and accuracy-oriented; organized; able to set priorities and maintain a sense of humor and grace under pressure
  • Ability to meet deadlines while upholding high standards and managing multiple projects
  • Strong computer skills, including intermediate to advanced level of experience with Track Changes and electronic copyediting in MS Word; experience with Adobe Acrobat comments tools and with XML coding or Word Styles a plus
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing workflows and procedures
  • A learning mindset, with an eagerness to expand skills and knowledge of the bookmaking process

Responsibilities

  • Production edit original one-color manuscripts, reissues, and paperback conversions, with the potential opportunity to production edit four-color manuscripts and gift products
  • Create and maintain schedules while juggling multiple projects
  • Hire freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers, and evaluate and supervise their work
  • Prepare electronic manuscripts for design and typesetting
  • Collate author and proofreader corrections, using Adobe Acrobat, and check all stages of proofs through printer-ready PDFs
  • Copyedit and proofread indexes, jacket/cover copy, and other materials as necessary
  • Attend weekly status meeting for Crown one-color titles with Assistant Director of Production Editorial
  • Work closely with managing editors, editors, designers, and production managers to anticipate and solve problems
  • Maintain high quality and consistent style within each book project
  • Support colleagues with backup reads and coverage when needed
