About The Position

WNYC & Gothamist is seeking an exceptional early-career journalist to join our newsroom as an Temporary Associate Producer for Community Partnerships. This Temporary Associate Producer will be on the Community Partnerships team and play a pivotal role in fostering meaningful relationships with diverse communities across the region, helping to develop a more comprehensive understanding of their needs and concerns, and enabling us to better serve and engage with them. The Temporary Associate Producer will contribute to developing initiatives that inform, educate, and empower communities on critical issues and will have the opportunity to use WNYC and Gothamist's diverse platforms to amplify a range of community voices. Additionally, this individual will support Radio Rookies, our award-winning youth journalism program. This is a two-year, grant-funded position that reports to the Editor of the Community Partnerships Desk.

Requirements

  • Some professional training or education in journalism is preferred (such as a degree, certificate program, student media experience or internship).
  • Strong writing skills across platforms — social, web, video and newsletters.
  • Curiosity about local news, civic issues and the people, culture and communities that make up New York City.
  • Strong commitment to youth empowerment and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet tight deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
  • Interest and appreciation for audio and text media and how they can be used to reach new audiences.
  • Commitment to accurate, ethical and inclusive storytelling.
  • The ability to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at NYPR.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in languages spoken by communities in our coverage area (notably, Spanish) is a strong plus.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who meet the above qualifications and who are residents of New York City and are graduates of the CUNY system.

Responsibilities

  • Help to conceive of and produce initiatives and events that center communities in the journalistic process, including forums, listening sessions and/or storytelling events.
  • Actively participate in collaborations with community partners to produce audio and digital content that amplifies the voices of New Yorkers.
  • Produce first-person narrative pieces for air and digital that highlight a diverse array of voices across our region.
  • Travel to various communities in and around New York City to help identify and foster long-term relationships with key community stakeholders to inform our journalism.
  • Help to build and maintain a database of community organizations and key partners.
  • Collaborate with other desk editors and reporters in the newsroom on community-centered reporting initiatives.
  • Assist the Radio Rookies program in all aspects of story production, including coordinating with partners, refining story ideas, scheduling meetings, cutting audio, and producing social and web copy.
  • Develop and pitch fresh story ideas derived from in-person listening sessions, pop-up events, advisory conversations, and other community interactions.
