About The Position

Represent first-generation entrepreneurs, hedge funds and private equity fund principals, tech founders, and high-net-worth families. Counsel clients regarding various aspects of their overall financial affairs, including sophisticated estate and income tax planning, corporate restructuring, establishing and running family offices and private trust companies, sophisticated insurance planning, and corporate governance and succession planning. Responsible for all aspects of estate and trust administration, sophisticated trust modification and migration strategies, and helping clients achieve their philanthropic objectives, through major grant arrangements with public charities, establishing and addressing complex issues related to private foundations, and grants to donor advised funds. Counsel clients on virtually every aspect of estate planning and work with clients to evaluate their unique situations and help them achieve their wealth transfer goals, including designing all necessary documents and structures to maximize tax efficiency and minimize the risk of disputes.

Requirements

  • JD or LLM or foreign equivalent degree, plus 3 years of experience as an attorney developing estate plans for individuals and families, trust and estate administration, and estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax planning.
  • Must also have 3 years of experience as an attorney: drafting sophisticated and comprehensive estate planning documents, including Wills, DIGTs, SLATs, ILITs, GRATs
  • Developing complex proactive estate tax planning strategies that navigate intricate legal framework and multi-layered wealth transfer structure, ensuring tax efficiency
  • Developing and implementing complex trust modification and income tax planning strategies, including trust decanting, mergers, and nonjudicial settlement agreements
  • Managing trust and estate administration, and drafting trust termination documents
  • Preparing complex estate tax filings, including Forms 706 and 709, which involve payment extensions under Sections 6161 and 6166, GST allocation strategies
  • Conducting legal research and analysis on complex legal issues, involving multi-jurisdictional and/or cross-border tax law.
  • Must be admitted to the Illinois bar or admitted to the bar of another U.S. state and eligible for admission to the Illinois bar within 2 years of hiring.
