About The Position

The Associate Political Affairs Officer position is part of the Northern Africa Division within the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO). The role focuses on monitoring and reporting on political developments in North Africa, providing analysis and recommendations to address challenges and risks in the region. The officer will support senior officials with briefing materials and contribute to the backstopping of field missions, all under the guidance of the Division's leadership.

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social sciences, international relations, law, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area is required.
  • Experience working in or on North Africa or the wider region is desirable.
  • Experience providing backstopping support to a peacekeeping operation or special political mission is desirable.
  • Experience providing support and advice to senior officials in an international and/or multigovernmental organization is desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze information from various sources, including press communications, to maintain up-to-date knowledge of political developments in North Africa.
  • Assist senior officials by preparing briefing notes, background papers, and talking points.
  • Draft summaries of meetings and articles, as well as correspondence and sections of reports.
  • Monitor political, socio-economic, and other relevant developments in North Africa.
  • Provide input for correspondence, notes, and memoranda for review by the Team Leader.
  • Contribute to the backstopping of field missions supported by the Division.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
