Job Summary Presides over the proceedings of a municipal court in the City of Dallas to provide citizens with a fair and competent court system. Job Description Overview The Associate Municipal Judge presides over the proceedings of one municipal court in the City of Dallas to provide citizens with a fair and competent court system. Usually works on a part-time basis and presides over hearings when full-time judge is unavailable.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal laws, statutes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal court administration.
  • Ability to analyze evidence, apply existing laws impartially, and render prompt and equitable verdicts.
  • Ability to exhibit respect and fairness towards all persons including but not limited to argumentative and often hostile persons in court.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience as a practicing attorney in the State of Texas.
  • Attorney License in the State of Texas.
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence

Responsibilities

  • Presides over the disposition of, and is responsible for, the adjudication of cases such as traffic, Class C misdemeanor, domestic violence, and city ordinance violations to ensure that cases are handled according to relevant laws and regulations.
  • Conducts pre-trial hearings as well as jury and non-jury trials; demonstrates competency in reviewing evidence and delivering verdicts; reviews search and arrests warrants.
  • Maintains and updates a central docket of all cases filed in the City; reviews and/or denies requests for continuances.
  • Supports court activities with Municipal Court Clerk, Municipal Judge, City Attorney, and other defense personnel.
  • Reviews probable cause affidavits, issues search warrants, and approves bonds, deferred adjudication, work release agreements and juvenile magistrate warnings to ensure that affidavits are handled properly and will not adversely affect subsequent legal proceedings.
  • Reviews legislation and current case law affecting offenses and the criminal justice system and implements procedures to ensure compliance; performs legal research as needed and determines fine amounts.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
