About The Position

SEL is seeking a people-oriented Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Product Support and Development – Mechanical team within the Manufacturing Division. This team designs, develops, and integrates mechanical and robotic solutions that help our manufacturing facilities build products more safely, reliably, and efficiently. This position will specifically focus on developing mechanical tools, fixtures, or jigs to improve our production processes. In this role, your day-to-day will be a mix of hands-on design work, problem-solving, and working directly with your customers. You’ll own everything from problem statement creation to solution integration and closing out the projects. CAD work is a regular thing, whether you're building new designs or tweaking existing ones. Your solutions will be brought to life on the production floor so making sure they actually work in the real world is huge. You’ll have opportunities that could include pneumatics, electronics, magnetism, etc. Design quality and collaboration are a big part of our day, so expect to be involved in design reviews and giving feedback. While you lead projects, you'll be focused on delivering results on time and within budget while delighting our customers with the value that your solutions bring.

Requirements

  • B.S. and/or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in three or more of the following areas: automation integration, materials and processes, mechanics, computer-aided design, electronic manufacturing techniques
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong project management experience
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL
  • Negative drug test result(s)

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of basic analog and digital electronics, PLC programming, and vision systems
  • Experience providing design, automation, or general engineering support in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience writing and/or conducting Design of Experiments

Responsibilities

  • Perform the following mechanical engineering functions: Design: plastic, sheet metal, machined component, component selection, assembly, etc. Analysis: tolerance, stress, fatigue, thermal, FMEA, etc. DFM: Design review & feedback Solution Integration: Deliver and implement designs/solutions on the production floor
  • Qualify, integrate, and monitor mechanical implementations.
  • Create detailed designs and prepare CAD data, coordinate changes to existing designs.
  • Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Material.
  • Provide accurate labor and material estimates.
  • Write and/or conduct experiments.
  • Write and maintain accurate project notebooks, system documentation, and work instructions.
  • Participate in system specifications, system design, and design reviews.
  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.
