L3Harris is seeking an Associate Tool Design Engineer to join our growing facility in Huntsville, AL. Manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices are all required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. Tool Engineers are responsible to define all of these items. The role of Tool Engineering is a mixture of design, structural analysis, project management, and hands-on manufacturing.

  • Working with cross-functional teams to define tool requirements.
  • Designing required tooling using PTC Creo and Windchill.
  • Using finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools in order to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities.
  • Conducting design reviews with cross-functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
  • Oversight of procurement/fabrication of tooling.
  • Working with manufacturing engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling.
  • Performing liaison support for tool maintenance by identification of tool problems, design of repairs, and implementation of modifications.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain a US security clearance.
  • Bachelor's Degree with 0 to 2 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 4 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Experience in the design of tooling to support manufacturing.
  • Experience using a solid modeling program such as Siemens NX, AutoCAD Inventor, CATIA, or Solid Works.
  • Experience in ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and system tolerance analysis.
  • Familiarity with principles of Design for Manufacturability.
  • Experience working in the defense industry.
  • Fabrication experience.
  • Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience.
  • Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience.
  • Active Secret US Security Clearance.
