About The Position

The Associate Managing Editor is responsible for a range of editorial services, including leading the editorial work for assigned accounts, which entails medical editing, fact checking, preparing submissions of pharmaceutical marketing materials, and reviewing internal and client changes. The Associate Managing Editor must be able to prioritize multiple deadline-sensitive projects, take ownership and work independently, have a keen attention to detail, and must have strong verbal and written skills. In addition, the Associate Managing Editor must demonstrate leadership skills, act as an Editorial voice across all departments, and is responsible for directly managing Senior Medical Editors, Medical Editors, and Associate Medical Editors, providing them with timely feedback, guidance, and coaching to support their growth and development. The Associate Managing Editor must adhere to internal agency process and adhere to and enforce best practices for Editorial across the agency. The Associate Managing Editor is expected to uphold the Precision Guiding Principles of Accountability, Mutual Respect, Client Service, Collaboration, and Purpose in all areas of work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in English, journalism, or a similar field
  • 5+ years of medical editing experience in advertising, pharmaceutical marketing, medical communications, and/or medical education industry
  • 0-2 years of management experience
  • Strongly proficient in application of AMA style (11th edition)
  • Knowledge of FDA requirements with respect to pharmaceutical advertising
  • Strongly proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat (PDF)
  • Strong written and verbal skills; mastery of English grammar
  • Ability to prioritize deadline-sensitive projects and juggle competing priorities
  • Team- and detail-oriented

Responsibilities

  • Medical Editing
  • Participate in the content review process throughout all stages of a job
  • Demonstrate and apply advanced copyediting, editing knowledge, and decision-making skills (this includes consistency with other resources, MLR feedback and reviewer preferences, as well as acquired knowledge of the account/brand) both for accuracy and readability, as appropriate, for all stages of the content development and client review process
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of AMA Style and brand style guidelines; develop and maintain all internal style guide(s) for assigned account(s)
  • Perform fact checking and clean reads, including unbranded claims, core promotional materials, and data-related claims
  • Prioritize work and track toward deadlines, proactively collaborating and communicating with core account team members throughout the lifecycle of a resource
  • Assist with clean reading/reviewing new business pitch materials
  • Agency Process
  • Provide expert insight on agency process from an Editorial perspective and serve as Editorial representative for all resources during project kickoff meetings, internal team meetings, regroups, and any other discussions, suggesting ways to optimize best practices and offer solutions
  • Ensure all pieces are compliant with each client’s unique medical/regulatory/legal (MLR) submission process
  • Understand and adhere to advertising, pharmaceutical marketing, or medical communications agency process
  • Management and Leadership
  • Develop and maintain account-specific Editorial SOPs/style guides and conduct account-specific Editorial training as needed for both Editorial team members and those in other departments
  • Plan and allocate resources within purview based on business needs in conjunction with other internal stakeholders (both within Editorial department across other departments) in a solutions-oriented manner; follow up with internal stakeholders to ensure work is being completed in a high quality, efficient manner as needed
  • Participate in interview/hiring process for new editors as needed, as well as onboarding process for new Editorial team members
  • Directly supervise 1-3 Editorial team members; oversee specific books of business (for which direct report(s) serve as lead editors) as applicable and periodically review/provide feedback on internal style guides for those brands
  • Provide direct report(s) with timely and proactive feedback, guidance, and coaching to support their growth and development; establish and track personal development for direct report(s)
