About The Position

As the Associate Logistics Manager (ALM), you'll work alongside the High Sierra Administrative Team to support the day-to-day logistics management of our wilderness backpack & rock climbing programs. The ALM reports to the Logistics Manager and together they oversee a team of Logistics Coordinators. As a role model and mentor within the High Sierra community, the ALM fosters a culture of accountability, learning, and collaboration. Areas of oversight include: logistics scheduling, logistics staff training and supervision, equipment acquisition and management, driving, vehicle coordination, inventory management, and food program. The ALM is expected to think critically, anticipate needs, and follow through on complex projects with attention to detail and care for both people and process. Requirements

  • Passionate about Outward Bound’s mission, programs, and course activities
  • Experienced in project and program management with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and cooperatively, effectively prioritizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Effective communicator, able to provide and receive constructive feedback with clarity and professionalism
  • Proficient with G Suite (Gmail, Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Meet, and Calendar)
  • Experienced in equipment repair and maintenance
  • Has a deep understanding and personal commitment to equity and inclusion in the outdoors
  • Possess 2-3 years experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field, a Bachelor’s degree, or any similar combination of education and experience
  • Have at least 1 year supervisory experience
  • Comfortable with general camping skills and camping in mountain environments
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 60 lbs
  • Comfortable sitting or standing at a desk or computer 50% of the time or greater
  • Comfortable working on their feet in logistics warehouse 30% of the time
  • Able to travel to front country course areas or other OBCA base camps 10% of time
  • Able to act with compassion, maintain composure, exercise sound judgment, and assess and mitigate risk under periods of stress or long hours of physically/mentally intensive work
  • Required Current Licenses & Certifications (by Start Date): Adult/Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED, Have had a valid US or Canadian driver’s license for at least five years
  • Additional Requirements (by Start Date): 21 years of age or older, Willing to authorize a federal & Live Scan background check, MVR check, and provide current (within the last 4 years) negative TB screen or test results upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Have prior experience at Outward Bound or other wilderness expeditionary programs (NOLS multi-day course or equivalent)
  • Competent in driving trailers up to 12ft in length
  • Have mechanical knowledge of automobiles and experience troubleshooting basic issues
  • Hold a current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification

Responsibilities

  • Ensure organized, efficient, and clean warehouse operations through clear systems and proactive planning
  • Oversee and acquire equipment: manage resources across the season to ensure equitable, safe and effective distribution and use by staff and students
  • Manage all on-site equipment repairs and establish clear systems for maintenance tracking and follow-up
  • Provide logistical and operational support for courses in front country settings, including but not limited to: driving transports, mentoring staff, and assisting with student evacuations
  • Assess, adapt, and implement logistical systems and paperwork before, during, and after the program season to improve efficiency and consistency, including the Logistics Resources page of Google Sites
  • Collaborate across departments (e.g., Student Services, Program Teams, and Administration) to anticipate needs and align logistical support with program goals
  • In Logistics Manager absence, oversee (including but not limited to): vehicle scheduling and maintenance, food ordering and food program maintenance, base operations, logistics staff supervision
  • Assist with coordination of Logistics Technical and Travel Trainings to ensure training quality and continuity
  • Support the professional development of logistical staff through mentorship, clear feedback, and regular check-ins
  • Foster a learning environment that emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving, and ownership of outcomes
  • Support Logistics Coordinators and interns: prepare and oversee warehouse day task lists for staff not actively supporting courses
  • Ensure logistics staff compliance with the Outward Bound Field Policies and Procedures (OBFPP) and all Charter Local Operating Policies and Procedures
  • Oversee food room operations to maintain safety, compliance, and organizational standards
  • Provide high quality training and assessment for organization drivers of full ton trucks and trailers
  • Participate in critical incident response which might require after work hours and could happen during scheduled time off
  • Promote best practices related to workplace health and safety by ensuring all are trained, supported, and proactive in identifying and reporting hazards
  • Collaborate with the Management Team to support facility needs, including basecamp and warehouse openings/closings, general maintenance, and community gatherings
  • Oversee procurement, inventory, and budget tracking for gear, first aid, and office supplies throughout the season
  • Project manage annual, post-season equipment inventories
  • Process financial transaction in accordance with OBCA expectations and standards
  • Apply strategic thinking to resource allocation and purchasing decisions to ensure cost effectiveness and sustainability
