About The Position

Harris Beach Murtha seeks an associate-level attorney to work on a variety of issues in the labor and employment practice. This position will, among other things, perform research, writing and other work relating to all areas of labor and employment law including, but not limited to, traditional labor/union issues, collective bargaining matters, discrimination laws and litigation, wage and hour law and other laws impacting the employment relationship.

Requirements

  • 1-4+ years’ experience in labor and employment or litigation law
  • Admission to New York State Bar required
  • Must have Juris Doctorate degree with an ABA accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of the bar
  • Must have excellent research and writing skills
  • Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Must be able to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated high level organizational skills for prioritizing workload
  • Demonstrated ability to absorb, process and understand new information rapidly
  • Maintains high standards of performance
  • Exhibits conscientiousness, dedication, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility
  • Must have a professional, cooperative, positive and flexible attitude
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities within various levels of the organization

Nice To Haves

  • Admission to Connecticut Bar (or ability to waive in) preferred
  • Military experience welcome

Responsibilities

  • Perform research on a variety of labor and employment matters
  • Draft handbooks and policies
  • Draft position statements and responses to administrative charges (EEOC, NY State Division of Human Rights, CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities)
  • Communicate with clients to obtain information for position statements
  • Draft motions in federal and state court
  • Respond to discovery requests
  • Draft deposition outlines, prepare exhibits, prepare witnesses. First and second chair depositions
  • Assist partners in preparing for mediations, arbitrations, oral arguments, hearings, fact finding conferences, and trials.
  • Second chair and where appropriate first chair mediations, arbitrations, oral arguments, hearings and trials.
  • The firm requires a minimum of 1800 billable hours annually
