About The Position

The Associate Investigator position at the FDA involves conducting inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with federal laws and regulations related to food, drugs, and medical devices. The role requires a combination of scientific and regulatory responsibilities, including sample collection, establishment inspections, and the analysis of data gathered during investigations. The incumbent will work independently and may assist senior investigators in complex cases, while also preparing reports and potentially testifying in court as an expert witness.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or proof of being a U.S. National is required.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as quality assurance, data science, statistics, or public health from an accredited institution.
  • For Band W, a bachelor's degree with no experience is acceptable, or at least 2 years of comparable experience in FDA-regulated industries.

  • Experience applying critical thinking in professional settings.
  • Familiarity with computer applications for project management and data analysis.
  • Experience conducting investigations using the scientific method.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections and investigations at human food facilities to ensure compliance with FDA regulations.
  • Collect samples and perform field analyses, including environmental sampling and assessment.
  • Interact with industry officials to obtain information and discuss the status of investigations.
  • Assist higher-level employees in inspections and field activities, gaining exposure to complex manufacturing practices.
  • Conduct re-inspections to follow up on non-compliant establishments and enforce compliance as necessary.
  • Investigate routine consumer complaints and assist in unusual complaint investigations.
  • Perform analyses and evaluations on data samples and documentation gathered during inspections.
  • Prepare final reports and position papers that support investigative findings and recommendations.
