About The Position

The Associate General Counsel at Fordham University provides high-level legal advice and services on a variety of legal issues pertinent to higher education. This role involves regulatory compliance, policy review, contract negotiation, and immigration law, among other responsibilities, while supporting various university departments and ensuring adherence to legal standards.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited American Bar Association law school.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in New York State no later than one year after the Start Date.
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, preferably in higher education or nonprofit law.
  • Outstanding communication skills to convey complex legal concepts to non-legal professionals.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares written responses to government agencies regarding employment and student issues.
  • Provides legal advice relating to the review, drafting, and negotiation of complex contracts across various colleges and departments.
  • Supports the Office of Finance in areas of risk, insurance, pension, tax, and contracts.
  • Oversees the preparation of immigration petitions and provides legal advice on immigration law affecting employees.
  • Counsels on legal issues involving students, including Title IX compliance, admissions, financial aid, and student discipline.
  • Collaborates with university departments to develop, revise, and interpret internal policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the University's policy bank and review process.
  • Conducts legal research regarding legal, policy, regulatory, and compliance issues impacting higher education institutions.
