Position Overview The Associate General Counsel role will be responsible for all labor and employment matters enterprise wide in a rapidly growing company, reporting to the Enterprise Deputy General Counsel. The Counsel will be a business partner to the People and Culture Team (P&C Team), directly supporting the Chief People Officer and her leadership team. This position will advise the P&C team regarding a multitude of issues, providing expert advice to develop, implement and monitor employment related strategies and practices.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school, admitted to practice.
  • 7+ years of relevant professional legal experience practicing labor/employment law in a large law firm or an in-house legal department.
  • Strong experience overseeing and managing the review, drafting and negotiating of employment contracts.
  • Experience in a growing organization, including the establishment of systems and processes that enable the legal function to scale and develop efficiencies.
  • Strong commercial sensibilities, and ability to work closely with businesspeople on their terms, and to negotiate complex commercial terms as well as legal terms.
  • Growth mindset, strong attention to detail, excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to work and act decisively in a fast-paced, high activity environment; comfortable in managing and responding to messages quickly and balancing multiple deals at one time.

Responsibilities

  • Act as primary legal partner for the P&C Team.
  • Strong cross-team global collaboration and coordination with business clients and legal colleagues are paramount (both US and India).
  • Advise and provide counsel to executive stakeholders across the enterprise on strategic organizational and employment matters.
  • Provide rapid, practical, and business-oriented legal advice to P&C Team to facilitate smooth decision-making on all aspects of day-to-day employment-related matters including hiring and termination issues, harassment, discrimination and retaliation, leaves of absence, DEI, reasonable accommodations, wage and hour issues, restrictive covenants, independent contractor issues, statutory employee issues, employee investigations.
  • Develop and optimize processes for legal review of employment related decisions such as involuntary terminations, including development of playbooks to develop standardized processes.
  • Advise on legal matters related to employee benefits and ERISA compliance.
  • Partner with litigation team colleagues on employment and labor litigation, reviewing pleadings, developing strategy, facilitating the gathering of information (documents, interviews); making recommendations at key stages in the process, etc.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for the P&C Team, including development, review, and revision of Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct, as needed.
  • Work closely with the P&C Team to create a trusted relationship and to ensure Zelis scales its team, processes and systems as the needs of its business and employees grow.
  • Lead and conduct investigations for sensitive employee matters.
  • Draft and negotiate of a variety of executive employment contracts.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of internal training courses on a variety of employment law topics.
  • Assist in company acquisition efforts as needed in areas of subject matter expertise.
  • Apply effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.
  • Superior legal drafting skills and experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts and corporate documents.
  • Experience working with offshore teams.
  • Partner with outside counsel as required.
  • Keep current on industry-wide legal trends, state laws and developments to proactively counsel business units and manage legal exposure.
