About The Position

The P NC LEGAL Department of the P LEGAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. This posting seeks to fill at either the Associate General Counsel or Senior Associate General Counsel (Litigation & Regulatory) - Oahu; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the selected candidate. The role involves providing in-house legal services, with an emphasis on public utility regulatory matters and litigation, for the benefit of Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light (the Companies) and monitoring work assigned to outside counsel.

Requirements

  • Law degree, membership in the Hawaii State Bar Association and license to practice law in Hawaii.
  • Thorough knowledge in commercial and business law.
  • General knowledge and familiarity with the legal areas listed in the job requirements and specialized knowledge in one or more of such areas.
  • Minimum of 4 years of legal experience required for Associate General Counsel.
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience required for Senior Associate General Counsel with a minimum of three years of concentration in public utilities regulatory law and/or litigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized knowledge in the area of public utility regulation and familiarity with Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 16-601.
  • Experience working with public utility commissions, consumer advocates and legislative bodies on public utility regulatory matters.
  • Experience appearing before courts, governmental administrative agencies and/or alternative dispute resolution forums.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal services, advice and practical solutions in relation to a wide range of public utility regulatory, litigation, and related issues affecting the Companies.
  • Represent the Companies before governmental administrative agencies and in court, prepare legal documents, pleadings, memoranda, motions and regulatory filings.
  • Prepare rate case filings and participate in all aspects of rate case hearings, including discovery, witness preparation, motions practice, drafting memoranda and briefs.
  • Handle all aspects of various litigation matters including commercial, contract, personal injury, and property damage claims, from case inception to judgment and appeals.
  • Advise officers, managers and employees regarding proposed legislation, newly enacted laws, legal trends, cases and policies pertinent to the Companies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Companies’ policies, procedures, and strategies.
  • Advocate the Companies’ positions externally.
  • Provide work direction and/or monitor work performed by outside attorneys to ensure efficiency and high value.
  • Assist in monitoring and managing outside counsel costs, including invoice reviews.
  • Participate as a legal adviser on task forces, committees and special projects.
  • Effectively communicate with senior management on legal issues and risks, including preparing and delivering presentations.
  • Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures and systems for provision of legal services and monitoring of potential areas requiring legal review.
  • Participate in Companies’ emergency response activities as assigned.
