Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline, plus at least 1 year of related experience.
  • Must have experience evaluating, designing, and estimating Overhead, Underground, Re-Conductoring, asset replacement projects in both Urban and Rural environments, in compliance with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and Company standards.
  • Must have experience using Pole Loading Analysis such as OCalc Pro, to design distribution section of power grid to verify the pole safety factor and prepare construction drawing layouts for improvements to existing electric systems.
  • Must have experience coordinating with transmission line to appeal transmission pole calculations for new designs to verify the pole safety factor and ensure standard compliance.
  • Must have experience with research and developing recommendations for equipment and materials selection for transformers.
  • Must have experience preparing cost estimates, specifications, evaluation guidelines and requisitions for each design using Maximo, ArcMap, GTech and submitting professional letters.
  • Must have experience performing Quality Control for projects to ensure the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), company quality standards and job specifications have been considered in the design process before the construction review.
  • Must have experience interacting with construction crew, vendor and client during the initial stage of construction for final inputs and clarifications on the job.
  • Must have experience performing advanced power calculations including voltage drop and voltage flicker for single phase and three phase services.
  • Must have experience initiating right-of-way procedures, permits, and verify easements.
  • Telecommuting is permitted within standard commuting distance of the Black & Veatch Dallas Office.
  • National travel required up to 10%.
  • Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of moderately complex technical drawings, specifications or electrical systems to ensure installation and operations conform to standards.
  • Responsible for one lines, connection diagrams, power pole design, evaluation guidelines, electrical equipment procurement, bill of quantities, interconnection requirements, construction record drawings (above ground and underground design), power distribution drawings, process equipment motor control and switchgear control schematics, power equipment layout, conduit routing plans, electrical installation details.
  • Operate computer-assisted eng. or design software or equipment to perform AC/DC loading calcs, ampacity calcs, battery duty cycle, battery charger, voltage drop, voltage flicker, conduit sizing, pole loading analysis and conductor sizing for overhead and underground utility lines.
  • Examples of software tools are Poleforeman, O-Calc, G-Tech, Arch Map Designer, ArcGIS and GWD/GIS.
  • Perform QA/QC checks on design projects including schematics, eng. design calculations, loading analysis, bill of materials.
  • Coordinate with permitting or right of way departments within Co. or client to ensure project requirements are met and provide necessary help in procuring the requirements.
  • Confer with engineers, clients, or others to discuss existing or potential eng. projects or products to provide an engineered solution.
  • Assign tasks to/coordinate with internal team members.
  • Ensure compliance with Co. quality program.
  • Support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection; design, implement and maintain substation and distribution equipment facilities components.
  • Perform site visits, field analysis and surveying for projects to collect, assimilate and manage all the data pertaining to power conductors, poles, equipment etc. to be used in eng. phase.
  • Assist client in the procurement of long lead items including poles that meets client requirements, power conductors, reclosers, etc.
  • Adhere to schedule and quantity requirements.
  • Prepare cost estimates and assist with proposal/business development activities.
  • Assist with mentoring of electrical engineers, performance management process and any corrective actions required.
  • Work directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Obtain an understanding of client interests and drivers through client communications and apply those to performance of work responsibilities, working with other disciplines as necessary to identify and coordinate necessary tasks to achieve client deliverables.
  • Provide eng. support during construction activities of projects by answering any technical questions and facilitating material support.
  • Work on As-Builts after construction of projects to make necessary updates and red-lines that helps in project close out.
  • Provide support to business development and pursuit activities for distribution eng. design projects by obtaining specifications and pricing from suppliers and preparing bidding documents.
  • No Hire / Fire authority.
