About The Position

The Office of Undergraduate Programs (UPO) in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks an Associate Director for the Grainger First-Year Experience (GFX). The person in this role provides leadership in designing, implementing, and assessing courses, programs, and activities that provide significant learning experiences for new Grainger students. They train and supervise approximately 150 Engineering Learning Assistants (ELAs) who teach the numerous individual sections of introductory courses designed to ensure that new students experience a smooth transition to the University of Illinois. In collaboration with other teams in UPO, the Associate Director develops, implements, and reviews course content and lesson guides for four classes taught by ELAs: ENG 100 (Grainger Engineering Orientation Seminar), ENG 101 (Exploring Engineering at Illinois), ENG 300 (Grainger Engineering Transfer Orientation), and ENG 398 (Exchange Student Orientation). Although they serve as the instructor of record, the Associate Director delegates teaching those courses to ELAs. In order to train the ELAs, the Associate Director develops curriculum and teaches ENG 377 and ENG 377 GLT for general ELAs and the ELA leadership team, respectively. Finally, the Associate Director coordinates unique learning experiences for students by organizing the GFX scholars program (ENG 177 courses) and the additional ENG 177 non-scholars courses, ensuring all new students have an opportunity to make the most of their Illinoiscation. As the leader of the GFX team, the Associate Director embodies community, engagement, and inclusion, supporting students as they build a strong foundation for academic, personal, and professional success as Grainger engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years' professional experience teaching and/or developing curriculum in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students and/or supporting student activities/programs in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with faculty and administrators to plan and implement curricular/co-curricular programs.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and/or developing a budget.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or master's degree in engineering, education, or other closely related field.
  • Experience selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating both student and professional staff.
  • Experience coordinating programs for engineering students and working with engineering units in higher education.
  • Experience working with campus administrative functions and units.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and review course content and lesson guides and serve as the instructor of record, overseeing ELAs teaching individual sections.
  • Develop curriculum, teach courses, and provide workshops.
  • Teach ENG 377 for new ELAs.
  • Teach ENG 377 GLT Global Leadership Training for head and lead ELAs.
  • Coordinate teaching of all GFX elective courses: ENG 177 GFX and ENG 177 GFX Scholars.
  • Develop specialized curricular and co-curricular learning experiences for first-year students and peer leaders.
  • Develop programs and workshops with other units in the Undergraduate Programs Office.
  • Coordinate and develop new ENG 177 and ENG 377 GFX electives in collaboration with other units.
  • Hire and supervise undergraduate student staff ELAs for ENG 100, 101, 300, and 398.
  • Deliver specialized training to head and lead ELAs.
  • Provide leadership and collaboration for key programs.
  • Collaborate with GFX liaisons and UPO advisors to review programs and ensure program quality.
  • Manage staff (selection, training, management, performance review).
  • Create a yearly GFX budget and review financial statements.
  • Represent The Grainger College of Engineering on campus committees.
  • Perform other educational, advising, and transfer-related duties.
