The Opportunity The Associate Director, Business Development for Abbott Molecular Diagnostics reports to the Head of Companion Diagnostics and is responsible for identifying, initiating, and executing strategic companion diagnostic (CDx) partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. This leader plays a critical role in advancing precision medicine, particularly in oncology, by aligning Abbott’s molecular diagnostic assay development capabilities with pharma targeted therapy pipelines. The Associate Director is responsible for building relationships with precision medicine leaders, clinical development teams, and biomarker strategy groups within pharma companies. They must understand drug pipelines and identify where a diagnostic test is required, then bring opportunities to Abbott’s internal R&D, medical, and regulatory teams. They facilitate internal discussions and help develop scientific proposals and business cases across each clinical phase. Success in this role requires knowledge of molecular diagnostics, including technologies such as FISH, PCR, NGS and ideally experience within pharma, precision medicine, or oncology drug development. The position focuses on expanding new CDx partnerships, building Abbott’s presence with pharma companies, and scaling a growing, strategic business area from the ground up. (This is a field based role, preferred candidate will reside in East (NJ/NY/PA/CT etc.) near major pharmaceutical/biotech hubs)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8+ years’ experience and demonstrated success in a complex selling environment (multiple stakeholders, multiple decision makers, product alignment to goals / initiatives)
  • Excellent negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong presentation and meeting facilitation skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work across the enterprise and with cross-functional teams to influence individuals and accomplish business objectives.
  • Demonstrated track record of executing complex strategic deals.

Responsibilities

  • Partner Identification & Relationship Building: Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with pharmaceutical and biotech companies developing targeted therapies requiring companion diagnostics.
  • Build a strong presence along the East Coast “Pharma Row,” engaging companies in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts as well as on the West Coast with biotechnology companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Attend key industry conferences to establish new contacts and assess partnership potential.
  • Opportunity Assessment & Strategy Alignment: Work with internal stakeholders to define key therapeutic areas and companion diagnostic priorities.
  • Evaluate partner fit based on scientific rationale, commercial opportunity, regulatory pathway, and portfolio alignment.
  • Conduct research to map drug pipelines, biomarker strategies, and emerging precision medicine trends.
  • Internal Collaboration & Reporting: Prepare executive-level presentations summarizing opportunity pipelines and deal status.
  • Improve internal BD processes and documentation.
