About The Position

The Barry University School of Law is searching for an Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Under the direct supervision of the Law School Dean, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs oversees the Student Affairs Division for the Law School. This includes supervisory authority over the following divisions: Student Life and Event Planning, Career Services, and Financial Aid. This position ensures integrity in the delivery of appropriate services to a diverse student population.

Requirements

  • JD degree required.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of relevant work experience required, preferably in a law school or other higher education setting.
  • Prior staff supervisory experience is required.
  • Exceptional analytical capacity, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with all members of the Law School community including faculty, staff, students, university colleagues, and alumni.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, design, plan, and execute multiple complex projects simultaneously with attention to detail and high level of excellence.
  • Tact, discretion, and experience handling highly confidential information.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while maintaining a high level of professionalism.
  • Strong technical skills, including full proficiency with standard business software and computer systems (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Internet.
  • Statistical skills a plus.
  • Experience strategically assessing priorities, managing change, and effectively juggling multiple complex activities in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Proven track record of managing institutional change, leading staff, and developing partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and executing strategies to achieve short and long-term goals.
  • Proven experience in general management, strategic planning, administration, and organizational development.
  • Experience developing trusting long-term relationships with constituents and creating and maintaining a team culture.
  • Exceptional written, organizational, and communication skills, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Experience ensuring integrity in the delivery of professional services to a diverse population.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and implement all student related matters by advising and counseling students on academic, student-related, or personal concerns.
  • Implement and enforce the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Manage all ADA students, including setting up testing arrangements and working with student note-takers.
  • Counsel and discipline students as necessary.
  • Resolve discrepancies within students’ Law School applications and administer disciplinary actions if necessary.
  • Evaluate students’ petitions regarding academic matters and recommend alternative solutions.
  • Counsel students regarding probation letters and dismissals.
  • Assist students and the Registrar’s Office with day-to-day problems.
  • Participate in the review of Honor Code complaints and make determinations for further action.
  • Review and make determinations on all excused absence forms submitted.
  • Revamp policy for proctors for law school exams with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Interview students who wish to transfer to the Law School as an initial step in transfer procedures.
  • Sign petitions for transfers/withdrawals.
  • Serve as the liaison to Uwill teletherapy service.
  • Assist students in developing professional identities and provide resources for mental health and wellness services.
  • Provide leadership and oversee the Student Affairs departments by supervising and counseling the Director of Student Financial Services and the Director of Career Services and Employer Relations.
  • Support the Director of Student Life and Event Planning, managing approximately 35 social student organizations and corresponding budgets.
  • Provide guidance for annual strategy for each department and assist with employee personnel issues.
  • Ensure that the Employment Questionnaire is completed accurately and timely.
  • Perform daily administrative tasks to assist the Dean and other Associate Deans and Assistant Deans.
  • Oversee long-term administrative and budget planning for each department within Student Affairs.
  • Correspond with Florida Bar regarding students who have incurred violations.
  • Review amendments to students’ Law School applications.
  • Assist with the development of updates to the student handbook.
  • Review/revise the Student Code of Conduct annually.
  • Act as liaison with the main campus to coordinate accommodated testing conditions for students with disabilities.
  • Serve on various committees across the Law School community.
  • Oversee Law School campus events, including graduation and commencement festivities, student orientation, Barristers’ Ball, and pro bono fair.
