About The Position

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs. This is a part-time (0.50 FTE) non-tenure administrative appointment that plays a key leadership role in advancing the College’s academic mission through strategic oversight of faculty affairs, academic policy, and faculty development. Provides additional academic duties: .5 FTE of this role will handle other academic duties such as clinical service or research. Clinical service will be performed at one of UTHSC’s practice partners; or Research activity will be within and support to one of UT’s basic science departments.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent) and eligibility for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic administration, preferably within a medical school or health science center.
  • Proven experience with faculty affairs processes, including promotion and tenure, appointments, and academic policy development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and units.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and collegial academic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists and oversees the faculty recruiting process, including offer development, determination of rank, and appointment paperwork.
  • Leads the promotion and tenure process, ensuring adherence to university policies, consistency across departments, and timely review of all dossiers.
  • Serves as a key member of the Executive Dean’s leadership council.
  • Develops structured pathways for leadership development, academic promotion, and scholarship.
  • Supports the annual review process for all College of Medicine faculty, ensuring evaluations are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Coordinates with the Executive Dean to organize and support the Dean’s Faculty Advisory (DFAC), including agenda planning, documentation, and follow-up actions.
  • Provides guidance and aid to individual Chairs and faculty.
  • Leads and oversees faculty development initiatives, including mentorship programs for early and mid-career faculty.
  • Addresses faculty grievances and conflicts of interest.
  • Helps establish and maintain equitable faculty salary guidelines, ensuring fairness and transparency across departments.
  • Represents the College of Medicine on the Faculty Affairs Working Group (FAWG) of the AAMC.
