About The Position

The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Chicago plays a vital role in the strategic leadership and operational management of academic programs within the Humanities Division. Reporting to the Dean, this position is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality educational programs that promote student success and faculty development. The Associate Dean collaborates closely with faculty and university administration to oversee curriculum development, program assessment, and faculty appointments, while also fostering interdisciplinary initiatives and supporting academic excellence.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • 7+ years of work experience in higher education administration or academic leadership.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of accreditation standards and academic policies.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and implementation of academic programs, courses, and curricula in collaboration with faculty and department chairs.
  • Coordinate program assessment and accreditation efforts to ensure compliance with university and external standards.
  • Monitor academic performance and outcomes, making recommendations for improvements and implementing changes.
  • Participate in strategic planning processes, providing input on academic priorities and goals.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures.
  • Work with leadership on resource allocation and budgeting for academic programs.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and schools.
  • Foster partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders to enhance academic offerings and opportunities.
  • Serve on University committees and represent the Division in various academic forums.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between faculty, administration, and other University stakeholders.
  • Support faculty recruitment, retention, and development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development and course design.
  • Directly supervise Director, Academic Affairs and indirectly supervise Assistant Director and/or Academic Affairs Administrator.
  • Develop and maintain best practices and process documentation for department operations to ensure efficient workflow and appropriate collaboration with other offices.
  • Discuss performance goals and promote professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Engage in annual performance management process and provide feedback and guidance to staff on activities.
  • Lead research and contribute to strategic planning for faculty and chair development; relocation of families with dual careers.
  • Create training and programming for faculty and chair development and recommend training and/or program improvements.
  • Prepare and present analyses, reports, and marketing materials to a wide variety of internal and external audiences.
  • Conduct complex research and data gathering for a wide range of projects.
