About The Position

HealthPartners is currently hiring for an Associate Counsel – Care Group. Sitting within the Law and Risk Management department, the associate counsel provides risk-based legal advice on health care delivery and corporate matters, including contract drafting and review, patient privacy, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, tax exemption, research, medical education, medical staff, and the like to HealthPartners and its related organizations in a collaborative team environment. Over time, the practice for the attorney in this position will increase in sophistication, breadth and depth of legal expertise, client assignments, and substantive areas of law. Requirements

  • Law Degree from an accredited school with strong academic credentials.
  • Current license to practice; must be admitted to practice law in Minnesota within 6 months or as determined by the employer.
  • Relevant and transferable experience advising health care delivery or corporate entities.
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to excel in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Windows and electronic document management environments. Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and an ability to adapt to new and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a complex and highly collaborative organization.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience in some or all the following areas: contract drafting and review (professional services, vendor, IT), telehealth, patient privacy, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, tax exemption, research, medical education, antitrust, and medical staff, or other experience in the health care industry which would support HealthPartners mission and care delivery activities.

  • 5 or more years of legal experience in health law counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth advice, analysis, and solutions to clients in a highly regulated industry and consistent with the organization’s risk tolerance.
  • Conduct factual inquiries, perform legal research and analysis, identify legal issues, and develop and recommend legal strategy solutions.
  • Negotiate, draft, review and revise agreements and a variety of other legal documents.
  • Work collaboratively with the Care Group Team and other members of the Department, clients at all levels, and as part of cross-functional teams.
  • Represent and advocate for HealthPartners and its related organizations before a variety of agencies and/or regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate independently with clients to provide advice on assigned projects.
  • Actively develop additional areas of expertise to create interchangeability with other Team and Department attorneys in other substantive areas.
  • Provide support to other Department members as assigned.
  • Support significant corporate transactions.
  • Manage outside counsel as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel, Care Group, and/or the General Counsel.
  • Exercise independent judgment on specific legal matters with oversight from senior lawyers.
