About The Position

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. Through innovative partnerships with people and organizations throughout New York City, DOP provides opportunities for those on probation to access services and opportunities that positively impact their life trajectory. Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism. Under executive direction of the Deputy Commissioner and with wide latitude for independent judgment, action and decision-making, the Associate Commissioner provides direction and administrative review to a management staff responsible for the administration of probation supervision and services for those who are aged 16 and over at the time of the offense. Duties and responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the codes, rules and regulations of the New York State Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives and applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in directing managerial staff who plan, coordinate, and implement adult probation services throughout the five boroughs of NYC, including the preparation of Pre-Sentence Investigations for the Courts and the supervision of adults convicted of felonies and misdemeanors who have been sentenced to probation in accordance with relevant State laws. Overseeing staff who investigate and execute warrants, conduct investigations for all, retake extradited probationers that have been located outside of the five boroughs, work with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct joint investigations or operations.
  • Assist in monitoring borough office operations to ensure commitment to, and attainment of, agency goals and objectives. Adjusts managerial focus, and identifies on-going training needs and other interventions when necessary, to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Assist in overseeing the allocation and assignment of staff; ensures that probation and supervisory probation officers are assigned manageable caseloads and have sufficient support staff.
  • Assist in recommending organizational changes; reengineering of and enhancements to, business processes to ensure appropriate allocation of resources; streamlining of procedures and the application of innovative and efficient methodologies.
  • Working with the New York City Police Department, borough District Attorneys’ Offices, Legal Aid/defense counsel, other city and state agencies, and not-for-profit organizations to develop programs that will provide probationers with tools to lead productive and successful lives while enhancing public safety. This includes, but is not limited to, programs that address education, employment and housing needs, domestic violence, mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction, sex offending, family intervention etc.
  • Assist in representing the agency in an official capacity, as required, on all Adult Operations matters including local, state, professional meetings and media inquiries, and participating in community efforts dealing with the prevention and control of crime and implementation of community justice approaches.
