We serve an area totaling 710 square miles, with over 1,190 schools and educational centers, and we employ over 74,000 individuals, making us one of the largest employers in our city.The Architectural & Engineering Services (A/E Service) within the Maintenance & Operations Branch has responsibility for all design activities associated with repair, modernization, and new construction projects executed by the Facilities Services Division of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The Architectural & Engineering Services (A/E Service) is comprised of architectural and engineering professionals with the capability for providing the following services:   Architectural Structural Civil Mechanical Electrical   While the primary focus of the A/E Services Section's design activities is on small projects and emergency repairs, it also regularly provides technical expertise to other branches as requested, i.e. program development, site assessment, scoping, project definition, agency interface (Division of the State Architect, city and county agencies), damage assessment, and repair recommendations The A/E Services Section supports the Design Management Section in three ways: (1) A/E services, (2) design management support and (3) QA/QC review of commissioned A/E deliverables.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering that included completion of at least one course in a recognized major computer-aided design software system or possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
  • Three years of experience in planning, designing, cost estimating, and preparing specifications for civil engineering for large commercial, governmental, or school projects that included the use of at least one recognized major computer-aided design software system.
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid license as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering issued by the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists is preferable.
  • Terminology, symbols, and sources of civil engineering design and drafting information
  • State and local building and grading codes and applicable ordinances pertaining to civil engineering features of building construction
  • Stress analysis, strength, and other physical properties of materials used in civil engineering construction

  • Prepare clear, concise reports and technical descriptions
  • Work effectively with public officials, commissioned architects and engineers, and District personnel
  • Supervise effectively
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and participating in the preparation of civil engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for building and ground improvements, streets, storm drains, and sanitary sewer systems; land, topographical, and construction surveying; preparation of tract maps and legal descriptions for property purchases, sales, leases, and easements.
  • Preparing civil engineering design standards for the guidance of District personnel and commissioned civil engineers.
  • Interpreting and clarifying construction drawings for inspectors and contractors and attending construction job "starts" and "final" meetings.
  • Coordinating projects with personnel in other design units and checking work for conflicts with other engineering and architectural features.
  • Reviewing relevant information on file and visiting project sites to analyze conditions and to study civil engineering problems.
