Summary : The Associate Chief Medical Officer - Clinical Operations Leader of the TCA Hospital campus provides clinical leadership for patient care, quality improvement initiatives, provider clinical activities, clinical processes and workflows, resource management, and system integration for provision of care across the continuum. Fosters tight relationships as a system thinker connecting diverse care givers to improve coordination of care. Dyad partner with the VP/Director of Nursing for TCA, TCN, and OSP hospital/s is part of the Administrative hospital leadership team. Works collaboratively with medical staff leadership to promote high quality patient care, implement process improvement, and facilitate educational activities. Assures that performance improvement and utilization management plans of the medical center meeting requirements of Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies. Serves as a medical leader connecting TCA, TCN, and OSP within ThedaCare and assisting externally as a liaison to the community with regards to population-based health improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • MD or DO and Board Certified in specialty.
  • Active, unrestricted license to practice in Wisconsin.
  • Five (3-5) years of progressively more responsible experience required.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in management and/or medical staff management roles, Knowledge of management theory and health care trends and an understanding of Medical Staff governance and peer review required.
  • Previous experience in Medical Staff leadership role required.
  • Thorough knowledge of hospital medical practice operations.
  • Knowledge of strategic and operational planning, quality, healthcare economics, financial management, management of others, regulatory requirements and current trends in the health care industry.
  • Experience leading patient experience and cultural safety initiatives.
  • Proven ability to lead and influence change management initiatives.
  • Work requires highly developed interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with physicians, employees and a wide range of external contacts (e.g. Board members, non-employed physicians, government officials and community groups.) Ability to understand and have a “sense of the appropriate” in difficult situations is required.
  • Collaborative team player with an ability to positively influence others.
  • An in-depth understanding and successful track record in quality assurance and utilization review actives required.
  • Analytical abilities necessary to evaluate impact of proposed changes in the operations of the Hospital required.
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor processes in a complex health care environment, including knowledge of hospital IDC-10 coding, billing and documentation standards.
  • Strong EMR experience, with Epic experience preferred.
  • Strong bias for action and results.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA, MS, MHA or similar degree or progress toward one is preferred but not required.
  • Matrixed organizational experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Vice Presidents at TCA, TCN, OSP and the System CMO Acute Care and the corresponding Medical Executive Committee (MEC) in all aspects of medical affairs with particular emphasis on clinical care, quality and efficiency throughout the continuum. Serves as an Ex Officio MEC member or full voting member as appropriate. This includes connecting care models between ambulatory and traditional impatient hospital-based services.
  • Oversees medical quality initiatives and programs for TCA, TCN, OSP including services as a member of local and system quality committees. Participates in preparation for all audits or accreditation visits by any state, federal, or accrediting bodies.
  • Monitors the quality of care/services provided by the physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians (APC’s) and the other clinical staff and functions as a leader in collaboration with local hospital leadership care council chairs and its Medical Executive Committee to improve the service provided to patients.
  • Collaborate with regional, hospital, Clinically Integrated Network (CIN), and medical staff leadership to implement and oversee standards for physician and APC performance in the hospital and ambulatory setting.
  • Participates in utilization review/management efforts, including prospective, concurrent, and retrospective assessment of patient care in support of provider professional development or promotion of system or local quality work.
  • Acts as medical advisor to administration where necessary in the management of ancillary, nursing, and contracted physician and APC services. Develops a collaborative working relationship working as a Dyad Partner with the VP/Director of Nursing.
  • Promotes ongoing medical education opportunities for medical staff physicians and allied providers. Partners with the Ambulatory and Acute CMOs and others to ensure optimal communication with referring physicians.
  • Participates in strategy development and implementation concerning physician affiliations. Serves as a key executive in physician recruitment, retention and growth strategies. Participates in interviews, assessments and recruitment of physician candidates for employment. Maintains a working, supportive relationship with the Director of Physician Recruiting.
  • Plays a key role in modeling and promoting positive physician relationships. Intervenes in physician behavior and non-compliance issues as appropriative/necessary and in collaboration with medical staff leadership.
  • Investigates, encourages and coordinates with the Vice President and Acute Care CMO for ThedaCare – TCA/TCN and President of the Medical Staff the identification of career-development opportunities for physicians, in order to ensure excellence in Medical Staff and Medical Staff Leadership. Actively purses physician engagement to move the Hospital in the direction of a physician compact. Assists in engaging physicians in the accreditation of various bodes.
  • Represents ThedaCare in opportunities to bring together the medical staff within ThedaCare as appropriate. Represents the Medical Staff in decisions related to technology acquisitions and clinical capital investments in ThedaCare. Assists with the design and implementation of Electronic Health Record upgrades, clinical logistic systems and other IS platforms within ThedaCare, acting as a physician champion and liaison. Assists in the creation of systems of integration and accountability among Primary Care Physicians. Serves as the medical spokesperson for ThedaCare as requested. Partners with Marketing and Care Management to highlight ThedaCare’s attributes.
  • Provides input to hospital Medical Directors’ performance appraisals, especially clinical performance and clinical quality outcomes. Support Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and overall documentation excellence. Support Care Management and assist in assuring appropriate patient status determination and Code-44 completing as applicable.
