About The Position

Earthjustice is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our growing team of lawyers who work to accelerate a shift towards electrification of goods movement, the transportation sector in total, as well as industries. The Associate Attorney will reside in our Gulf Regional Office, focusing on litigation, advocacy and strategy before Texas’s public utility commission (PUC) and in courts to support an equitable transition to clean, affordable, and reliable energy. The work may include a litigation docket at the PUC. Earthjustice is the nation’s leading environmental law organization. The Associate Attorney position is a three-year position with the potential for extension, designed to help attorneys who are in the early stages of their careers to develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various phases of public interest litigation. As Associate Attorneys gain experience, they gradually take on more independent responsibility for their cases but work throughout their tenure under the supervision of Senior Attorneys, Deputy Managing Attorneys, or the Managing Attorney. Many Associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice and with other public interest organizations. Earthjustice’s Right to Zero docket focuses on reducing pollution by transitioning away from combustion and towards cleaner, healthier technologies. Combustion is the largest source of emissions for both nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to ozone and particulate matter pollution, and carbon dioxide (CO2), which drives climate change. While cleaning up the fuels used in combustion can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, health-harming pollution would persist. To address both criteria and climate pollution—as our climate, health and justice imperatives demand—we must transform the way we move people and goods, the way we heat our homes and businesses, and the way we produce, process and assemble goods. We must transform our economy by electrifying all that we can with clean power. The new Associate Attorney role will reside in our Gulf Regional Office, focusing on litigation and advocacy strategies at Texas’s public utility commission and before state regulators to prevent the buildout of barriers to clean energy adoption, and to secure policies and practices that support a transition to clean, affordable, and reliable energy. This position can be based anywhere in Texas; the Gulf Regional Office is located in Houston, Texas.

Requirements

Law school graduate 0-6 year of legal experience and admitted to, or willing and eligible to apply for admission to, the Texas Bar.
Excellent research, analytic, writing, and communication skills.
Strong and demonstrated work ethic, good judgment, initiative, and creativity.
Strong desire to fight for the right of all to a healthy environment.
Ability to work well independently and in a team-oriented atmosphere.
Commitment to serving the public interest and a passion for the role of Earthjustice and its mission.

Responsibilities

Conducting legal and factual research.
Reviewing and analyzing administrative records and technical documents.
Drafting motions, briefs, and other legal and factual documents in support of litigation and administrative advocacy.
Participating in proceedings before federal and state courts and agencies.
Cultivating relationships with clients, experts, allies, and coalition partners.
Integrating media and legislative advocacy into litigation and other legal strategies.
Hiring and supervising law students as Earthjustice interns or clerks.
