General Function: Under the supervision of the Aquatics Executive and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Associate Aquatics Executive is responsible for the administration of safe, quality aquatic programs. Provides leadership to include Swim Team, Swim Lessons, Safety Around Water, Second Grade Learn to Swim, and general pool operations. The Associate Aquatics Executive gives leadership to association priorities including swim team, risk management, and Second Grade Learn to swim. Major emphasis and responsibilities must be in the areas of budget, program growth, staff development and the positive approach to problem solving. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Associate Aquatics Executive will directly supervise Aquatics Directors, full-time hourly staff, and numerous part-time employees and volunteers at assigned centers to ensure successful programming. They will work closely with other center leaders in efforts to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in pool management and operations and a history of aquatics programming experience.
  • Y-USA Multi-Team Leader Certification (or equivalent) required within two years and must begin working towards certification within 6 months.
  • Must hold YMCA certifications (or Red Cross equivalence) in Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Instructor, and YMCA Swimming Instructor within 6 months of employment; Trainer level certifications preferred.
  • Must obtain a Pool Operator certification within first 6 months of employment.
  • Must have ability to interact with people from all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to recruit, hire, certify and supervise qualified personnel needed for operations and programs.
  • Certification of CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background checks and criminal offender registry check.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations. Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning.
  • Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include mobility for travel to conferences, touring facilities, properties and participating in promotional and special events sponsored by the Association.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all program areas.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Promote and participate in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Support, Capital and United Way Campaigns.
  • Participate in promoting YMCA membership through assisting in the recruiting and retaining of members utilizing retention tools available.
  • Follow mandated child abuse reporting requirements.
  • Prepares statistical, analytical, and narrative reports regarding aquatics programs and operation.
  • Work with Aquatics team to organize, plan, promote, and schedule programs and events such Family Nights and Water Safety Events to assist in center retention efforts.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of the Learn to Swim/Safety Around Program for Northern centers (MAT, MDX, and GWP)
  • Review and evaluate swim team program to determine participant needs and possible areas of improvement or growth.
  • Develop and implement staff recruitment program by way of YMCA swim team participants.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of aquatics
  • Prepare and administer assigned annual budget, making revisions as necessary to meet or exceed budget guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records. Ensure staff certifications are up to date and current. Maintain department tracking.
  • Maintain current certifications and knowledge to ensure that YMCA facilities and equipment are in accordance with health codes.
  • Maintain a current schedule of pool activities.
  • Support maintenance and upkeep of pool area, facilities and filtration systems.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, retain, and lead Y staff; review and evaluate staff performance; develop strategies to build an exceptional culture and to motivate the staff and volunteers to achieve their goals.
  • Hold regular one-on-one meetings with all direct reports to learn about, gauge satisfaction, and provide career development coaching/training.
  • Hold regular department staff meetings to train, coach, role-play, and provide updates on center and association-initiatives.
  • Complete all job-related, supervisory, and other trainings as required.
  • Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Actively participate in center leadership activities (to include Leader on Duty and occasional special events).
  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Aquatics Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.
  • Work collaboratively with all of the Y s Aquatics teams to support the high-quality development and delivery of the Y s significant Aquatics programming across the region
  • Attend, and actively engage in certification/leadership programs, conferences, meetings, and events.
  • Interview, hire, train employees; plan, assign, and direct work.
  • Evaluate the performance of staff, counsel in areas where improvement is needed and continually strive to improve the level of performance through continuous training and performance standards.
  • Establish career development program for direct reports.
  • Build positive relationship with other Association staff members; share information with appropriate associates; cooperate with others in the Association.
  • Act as building supervisor (LOD) on assigned nights and weekends.
