The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. The Assistant Warden oversees and directs the management of program and operational services such as security operations, correctional classification, social work, recreation, psychology, religious services, maintenance, food services and others for the incarcerated population. Work is performed in a correctional facility and employees are exposed to and incarcerated individuals who may be abusive and hostile.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Two years of experience as a Facility Administrator or Four years of experience as a Security Chief.
  • Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social science.
  • Experience as a Director or Manager of a program within a correction institution can be substituted for the required experience as a Security Chief on a year for year basis for the Security Chief experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes similar to Facility Administrator or Security Chief on a year for year basis.
  • Experience served in positions similar to the rank Facility Administrator and Security Chief in other jurisdictions will be considered on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, administers, coordinates and reviews the security, treatment and administrative programs of a correctional facility in the state of Maryland
  • Develops policies and procedures in order to improve operations in a correctional institution
  • Reviews recommendations made by correctional classification personnel in order to approve or disapprove changes in security operations, job assignments, program participation, and disciplinary action
  • May coordinate the work release program and develop policies of which to ensure effectiveness in the release and return of incarcerated individuals
  • Handles problems and complaints from supervisory and managerial personnel
  • May administer grievance decisions and employee discipline in accordance with Division of Correction and Department of Personnel rules and regulations
  • Attends task force meetings, and committees in order to supply or collect information and to discuss problems and issues affecting the institution
  • Ensures that the institution is in compliance with all regulations of the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards
