About The Position

The Humane Rescue Alliance seeks an Assistant Veterinary Technician Manager to join a dynamic, supportive and quality-focused medical team providing surgical and medical care to animals in the nation’s capital. The Assistant Veterinary Technician Manager provides a wide range of medical care to shelter and public-owned animals and manages a team of veterinary assistants and technicians. This role will oversee the operations and flow of the medical center and work with medical leadership to develop department protocols. The candidate directly supervises veterinary assistants and technicians and reports to the Veterinary Technician Manager. This role offers a unique opportunity to support animals in need, deepen your understanding of shelter and community medicine, and develop your management skills in a supportive environment. Candidates should have strong technical skills and a comprehensive knowledge of veterinary medicine, animal shelter procedures, and animal care and behavior. Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience as a veterinary technician in an animal hospital or shelter, demonstrating strong organizational skills required. Certified or Licensed Veterinary Technicians are encouraged to apply.
  • One or more years of customer service, administrative, or clinic operations experience in a fast-paced environment, with proven ability to train others, prioritize tasks, and maintain efficient workflows.
  • One or more years of experience in a leadership role overseeing veterinary support staff or clinic operations.
  • Proficient technical skills, including but not limited to administering medications, phlebotomy, placing IV catheters, surgical support, analyzing blood, urine, and fecal samples.
  • Knowledge and skill in restraint and handling techniques, general animal safety practices, and ability to recognize animal behavior patterns.
  • Ability to lead effectively and remain professional in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer-service orientation. Ability to communicate in a friendly and professional manner with a variety of individuals representing the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees.

  • Successful completion of a Euthanasia Certification program within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to routinely work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365, shelter and practice management software, and internet applications.
  • Passion for the HRA mission, and for caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species, and supporting and educating members of the public, free of judgment or bias.
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment in a positive, professional manner.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more years of progressively responsible experience in an open admittance animal shelter preferred.
  • Certified/Licensed Veterinary Technician are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of a veterinary technician with the highest standards of care and attention to detail.
  • Train new and existing veterinary support staff in technical skills, daily operations, software systems, and safety protocols.
  • Perform and assist with humane euthanasia when necessary.
  • Ensure medical equipment is in good working order, perform quality control measures, and promptly report issues to the Veterinary Technician Manager.
  • Maintain departmental procedures and protocols regarding humane care and treatment of animals, exam area cleanliness, and safety guidelines.
  • Assign tasks to volunteers and oversee their daily work.
  • Work with Medical department leadership to manage the operation, flow, and protocols of the Medical Center.
  • Update and maintain population management software, patient files, review care plans, and handle other administrative duties, as necessary.
  • Under the supervision of the Medical Director, review and maintain controlled substance recording.
  • Collaborate with medical department leadership to review and update departmental protocols and SOPs as needed.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support veterinary support staff to promote professional growth, performance excellence, and mission alignment.
  • Coordinate staff scheduling and daily assignments to ensure appropriate coverage across medical, surgical, and community clinic functions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain consistency and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with the Veterinary Technician Manager to identify opportunities for workflow improvement, staff training, and operational enhancements.
  • Serve as a liaison between medical staff and medical leadership to ensure smooth communication and timely resolution of operational challenges.
  • Participate in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding in collaboration with the Veterinary Technician Manager.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and collaborate with medical department leadership on annual performance evaluations for the medical team.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to further HRA’s goals.
  • Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
  • Assist the Medical Director and Veterinary Technician Manager with other duties as assigned.
