About The Position

This position is created in accordance with ORS 569.370; responsible for inspection and control of noxious weeds within Klamath County, enforcing state statutes pertaining to noxious weeds, supervising the weed control crews, managing Weed Control contracts, applying herbicides and managing vegetation within County Road right-of-way’s. Requires knowledge of State statutes and County codes pertaining to noxious weed control and right-of-way vegetation management and irrigation related road watering.

Requirements

  • Experience or training in recognition and eradication of noxious weeds
  • Thorough knowledge of Klamath County's road system and Oregon State Highway system.
  • Experience operating a 4-wheel drive vehicle in off-road conditions
  • Experience in operating ATV’s, UTV’s and small boats
  • Experience operating GPS units, tablets and reading maps.
  • Computer skills with proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Oregon Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (Minimum categories: Regulatory Weed and Right-of-way)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Oregon All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Education Card
  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR Certification
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the weed crews in the eradication of noxious weeds and problem vegetation growing or seeding in Klamath County.
  • Controls Noxious Weeds and Completes daily spray reports consistent with County requirements and ODA regulations
  • Travels throughout Klamath County to inspect for noxious weeds.
  • Inspects County Road right-of-ways for problem vegetation and illegal road watering and works directly with Public Works staff and serves notices to property owners to address the issue at hand.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor in contract administration for new and returning weed clients; bid preparation and purchase order administration; tracking of contract balances daily; audit of weed crews’ spray reports for accuracy. Apply for weed control grants on an “as needed” basis.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor in enforcing State Statutes and/or County Codes pertaining to noxious weeds, roadside vegetation and illegal road watering; ensures that written notices and/or citations follow state statutes and county codes.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor in overseeing the inventory and ordering of chemicals used in noxious weed eradication.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor in purchasing supplies and equipment for the daily operation of the Weed Control Dept. and performs maintenance and repairs on weed control vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Develop and implement education and outreach efforts regarding noxious weed identification, control and treatment options.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor to prepare and monitor weed control budget.
  • Conducts weed control employee interviews, evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Implements integrated weed management practices to control noxious weeds; assists with chemical spraying as needed.
  • Assists Weed Control Supervisor to work with landowners to implement no-spray agreements and place “no-spray” signs in County Right-of-way’s and conducts annual monitoring and renewal of No-Spray Zones.
  • Responsible for department safety practices and procedures, including attending County Safety Meetings.
  • Meets annually or semi-annually with the Klamath County Weed Board to discuss issues concerning weed control.
  • Conducts culvert inspections and inventory.
  • Plow snow on an “as needed” basis.
  • Inspects culverts & facilities as requested by the Drainage Service District during the non-weed control season.
