The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Superior Court Division handle D.C. Code offenses, while those in the Criminal Division deal with U.S. Code violations. The Special Proceedings (SP) Division manages post-conviction motions in both the U.S. District Court and the Superior Court of D.C., addressing a variety of legal issues including ineffective assistance of counsel claims, actual innocence claims, and requests for early release in serious violent crime cases. The work can range from straightforward to complex, requiring extensive legal research and writing, as well as participation in hearings. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress. Initial attorney positions are temporary for 14 months, pending favorable background checks.
